Cori’s question perfectly illustrates the dilemma many homeowners face with these recessed areas. Such nooks, while adding character and architectural interest, can be incredibly tricky to decorate. Without careful thought, they can end up looking odd, cluttered, or simply out of place within the broader room design. Cori’s suggestions — a serene zen garden or a crisp nautical theme — provided an excellent starting point for my creative process. My goal was to take her initial ideas and expand upon them, creating a space that is both visually appealing and highly functional. I started my design process by browsing for inspiration online, looking for examples that successfully addressed the challenges of these spaces. Here are a few great ideas I found that demonstrate the versatility and charm a well-decorated nook can bring to a home:

The use of natural wood adds warmth, making the small space feel inviting rather than cramped. It’s a brilliant way to utilize vertical space and introduce both seating and storage.

This illustrates how lighting and textiles can dramatically alter the mood of a small space, turning it into a magical escape. My Vision: A Soft Nautical Nook with Smart Storage

With Cori’s specific options in mind, and having drawn inspiration from various creative nook designs, I quickly formed a clear vision for her space. While both her ideas—a zen garden with mirrors and a panelled nautical theme—were incredibly creative, I aimed for a slightly softer, more integrated approach. I couldn’t quite envision a fully mirrored plant garden feeling cohesive within a family room setting, and while a nautical theme sounded delightful, I wanted to interpret it with a subtle, contemporary twist. Here’s what I ultimately designed to elevate her nook:

Crafting a Nautical Nook with Shelves and a Storage Bench

My approach for Cori’s nook wasn’t about strictly adhering to one of her options, but rather about blending inspiration to create a truly inviting and practical space. The goal was a “soft nautical” aesthetic, one that evokes the calm and beauty of the seaside without being overly themed or cliché. This vision guided every element of the design, from the backdrop to the functional furniture pieces.

Defining the Space with Wallpaper: To achieve this soft nautical look, I began by selecting a captivating wallpaperfor the back wall. The design I chose is a classic, traditional wallpaper that subtly introduces pattern and texture. However, for those who, like me, appreciate flexibility or are a bit indecisive, I highly recommend exploring removable wallpaper. It’s an ideal solution for smaller spaces like nooks, allowing you to experiment with patterns and colors without a long-term commitment. Removable wallpaper is incredibly user-friendly to install and, crucially, to remove if your style evolves. Plus, the sheer variety of designs available today ensures you’ll find the perfect pattern to complement your vision, whether it’s a subtle stripe, a botanical print, or a geometric motif, all without the fuss of traditional wallpapering methods.

Maximizing Functionality with Integrated Storage: One of my top priorities for this nook was to integrate effective storage solutions. As the original photo hinted, and as is typical for most busy families, maintaining a tidy home can be an ongoing challenge. This nook presented a prime opportunity to enhance organization. I’m a huge advocate for using decorative basketsstrategically placed throughout the house to neatly corral everything from children’s toys and tech accessories to blankets and extra pillows. They are a game-changer for quick clean-ups; simply toss items into a basket, and voilà, the room instantly appears more organized! With this in mind, I designed a system that includes a couple of open shelves for displaying cherished items and, more importantly, several large baskets tucked neatly underneath a padded bench. These baskets provide ample hidden storage, keeping clutter out of sight yet easily accessible.

The addition of a padded bench serves multiple purposes. It introduces a welcoming softness to the space, which is especially important in a family room. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it offers practical extra seating, perfect for gatherings or simply a cozy spot to relax. The bench and accompanying shelves are crafted from rustic wood, intentionally chosen to evoke the natural, weathered look of driftwood. This choice not only contributes to the beachy texture but also grounds the space with an earthy, authentic feel, seamlessly tying into the soft nautical theme.

Embracing the Nautical Palette and Textures: A nautical theme simply isn’t complete without the judicious incorporation of blue. In this design, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with indigo mud-cloth. Its watery, blurred texture is perfect for this space, effortlessly giving off a natural, serene nautical vibe without relying on overt marine motifs. The deep indigo tones complement the lighter elements and bring a rich depth to the palette. To further enhance the comfort and visual appeal, I’ve layered in a few different pillow variations, creating an inviting medley of textures and patterns. A soft, cozy throw blanket draped over the bench adds another layer of warmth and a touch of lived-in comfort. Finally, a hint of plant life brightens the space, injecting a natural freshness that beautifully completes this inviting and functional nautical nook. This combination of natural materials, textiles, and a calming color palette transforms what was once an awkward recess into a cherished part of the family home.
