Here’s a detailed breakdown of the materials you’ll need to successfully install your own pegboard wall, creating a clean, organized, and easily accessible storage area.
Here’s what you’ll need for this transformative DIY project:
- Peg Board (4′ x 8′ sheet): The foundation of your storage system. Standard sheets are widely available and offer ample space.
- (6) Furring Strips (1″x 2″ x 8″): These inexpensive wooden strips are crucial for creating the necessary standoff space behind the pegboard, allowing the hooks to properly engage.
- Chop Saw: Essential for precisely cutting the furring strips to size, ensuring a neat and flush frame.
- Nails: For securing the furring strips to the wall.
- Hammer or Nail Gun: A nail gun will significantly speed up the framing process and provide a more secure attachment, especially for larger projects.
- Screws: For securely attaching the pegboard to the furring strip frame.
- Electric Screwdriver: Makes driving screws effortless and efficient.
- Primer & Paint: For a clean, finished look that protects the pegboard and integrates it seamlessly with your room’s aesthetic.

- Stud Finder: Absolutely crucial for locating wall studs, ensuring your pegboard is securely mounted and can bear weight.
- Level: For drawing straight lines and ensuring your frame and pegboard are perfectly horizontal and vertical.
- Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements of your wall and pegboard placement.
- Pencil: For marking measurements and outlines on the wall.
Step 1: Planning Your Pegboard Placement and Size
To begin this exciting DIY project, the first critical step is to thoughtfully decide where your pegboard will be installed and what dimensions it will ultimately take. Pegboard typically comes in a standard 4-foot by 8-foot sheet, which is a substantial size, offering extensive storage capacity. For my laundry room, I opted to utilize the full dimensions of the sheet, foregoing any cuts, to maximize the available storage space. To ensure precise placement and a symmetrical appearance, I started by finding the exact center of my chosen wall. From this central point, I meticulously measured and marked out the precise boundaries where my 4×8-foot pegboard panel would be positioned. This careful planning ensures that the pegboard will look balanced and visually appealing in the room.
Step 2: Creating the Essential Standoff Frame
A crucial aspect of pegboard installation is ensuring it stands slightly off the wall. This gap is vital because it allows the pegboard hooks to pass through the holes and securely lock into place. Without this standoff, the hooks wouldn’t have anywhere to go, rendering the pegboard useless for hanging items. To easily create this necessary frame, I used my level to draw a precise perimeter on the wall, marking out the exact 4’x8′ rectangle where the pegboard would eventually sit. This diligent approach will prevent future issues and ensure your pegboard hangs evenly and securely.
With the studs identified and the furring strips cut to size, it was time to attach them to the wall. For this step, I utilized a nail gun, which makes quick work of securing the strips firmly to the wall studs. If you don’t have a nail gun, a hammer and nails will also work, though it will take a bit more time and effort. Drive nails through the furring strips and into the studs at regular intervals to create a robust and stable frame. This frame provides the necessary spacing for your pegboard hooks and significantly enhances the overall strength of your storage system.
Step 4: Enhancing Support for Heavy Items
Once the basic perimeter frame was securely in place, we recognized the need for additional support. Knowing that I intended to hang heavier items, such as my iron and ironing board, on the pegboard, relying solely on the perimeter strips wouldn’t be sufficient. Therefore, we strategically added several more furring strips across the interior of the frame. These additional horizontal and vertical strips provide crucial reinforcement, distributing the weight more effectively and preventing the pegboard from bowing or detaching over time. This extra step is paramount for creating a truly durable and long-lasting pegboard storage system, especially when dealing with heavier laundry essentials.
Step 5: Pre-Drilling and Attaching the Pegboard
With the robust frame complete, the next step involves preparing the pegboard for attachment. We carefully went through the pegboard sheet and drilled pilot holes at various points, ensuring these holes would align with the furring strips beneath. This pre-drilling step is vital as it prevents the pegboard from splitting when screws are driven through it. It also makes the attachment process smoother and more accurate. Once the pegboard was securely fastened to the wall, it was time to give it a polished, finished look. I began by applying a coat of Zinsser Primer 123. Priming is a crucial step for pegboard as it seals the porous surface, provides a uniform base for the topcoat, and ensures excellent paint adhesion. After the primer had dried thoroughly, I followed up with two coats of Valspar’s Signature Paint + Primer in the soothing shade of Coconut Milk. Using a paint roller makes this process efficient, covering the large surface quickly while minimizing brush strokes. Be mindful not to clog the peg holes with too much paint; thin, even coats are best. This final painting step transforms the raw pegboard into an attractive and integrated element of your laundry room decor.
