Meet the Visionary Behind the Makeover: Jaime from Raising Up Rubies
Hello, fellow home decor enthusiasts! I’m Jaime, and it’s an absolute honor to share my passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces here on Remodelaholic. As a wife to a wonderful husband and a busy mom raising two energetic girls, life can often feel like a whirlwind. My love for crafting and home remodeling keeps me grounded and creatively engaged, constantly finding new ways to infuse our home with personality and charm.
Our home, which we purchased six years ago, has been a canvas for numerous remodeling projects. While each room holds a special place, our master bedroom was one of the last on our renovation list. Looking back, I often wish we had tackled it first, as it has truly become a much-needed sanctuary of rest and rejuvenation for my husband and me. The transformation was a labor of love, but the immense joy and comfort it now provides make every moment of effort incredibly worthwhile.
Embracing Simplicity: A Shift in Perspective
My journey in home renovation has often mirrored a personal evolution. In the past, I confess to being overly ambitious, frequently diving into new projects with such fervor that I’d quickly burn out. This past year, however, has brought a significant shift in my perspective. I’ve been actively learning the profound importance of simplicity and intentionality in all aspects of life.
This means consciously choosing how I spend my time, dedicating energy to the things that truly matter. It’s about mastering the art of staying on top of daily tasks—meal planning, routine cleaning, laundry, and organizing paperwork. When these foundational elements are maintained, I avoid the overwhelm of a towering pile of shredding or the frantic rush to prepare dinner at 6:30 PM (a common scenario for a self-proclaimed procrastinator!). This newfound discipline extends beyond household chores and deeply influenced the design philosophy for our master bedroom: creating a space that inherently fosters peace, organization, and a sense of calm.
Step Inside Our Romantic Master Bedroom Retreat
Come on in and take a closer look at the master bedroom we lovingly renovated last year. My primary goal was to craft a space that served as a genuine resting place for both my husband and me – a quiet, romantic haven. In the bustling rhythm of daily life, amidst careers and the beautiful chaos of raising children, it’s all too easy for the subtle nuances and precious moments of a marriage to get lost. This room was designed to capture and celebrate those “little things”—moments of quiet connection, even when exhaustion looms, and your eyes can barely stay open. It’s a testament to creating a dedicated space where intimacy and tranquility can flourish.

Our journey began with a room that, while spacious, lacked character and a sense of purpose. When we bought the house six years ago, this room was a blank slate, offering immense potential for transformation. We envisioned a classic black and white palette, knowing it would provide a timeless, elegant foundation for a truly serene environment. This aesthetic allowed us to blend vintage finds with custom elements, achieving a look that feels both sophisticated and deeply personal.

Elegant Lighting: The Chandelier and DIY Medallion
One of the focal points in our master bedroom is the absolutely gorgeous crystal chandelier, a fantastic find from Home Depot. Its sparkling presence adds an immediate touch of luxury and romance to the room. To further enhance its elegance and create a truly custom look, we crafted a unique ceiling medallion. This DIY project involved repurposing an old mirror frame, which we then adorned with soft batting and elegant fabric. The result is a bespoke piece that beautifully frames the chandelier, elevating it from a simple light fixture to a captivating work of art. I’m eager to share a detailed tutorial on how I created this medallion very soon!
A Vintage Gem: The Repurposed Dresser
Thrift store treasures always hold a special place in my heart, and this dresser is a perfect example. I discovered this beauty at Goodwill for an incredible $39.99! It was certainly waiting for a little love, but I immediately saw its potential. With a fresh coat of spray paint, delicate lace detailing, and some updated hardware, this once-overlooked piece was completely transformed. It now stands as a stunning, unique addition to our bedroom, proving that a little creativity and elbow grease can turn a budget find into a cherished heirloom.
Clever Concealment: Hubby’s DIY Satellite Box Cover
My handy husband is a true marvel when it comes to practical solutions! He ingeniously built a simple frame and covered it with radiator metal. This clever design serves a dual purpose: it perfectly camouflages our satellite box, maintaining the clean aesthetic of the room, while still allowing the remote signal to pass through effortlessly. It’s a testament to thoughtful design solving everyday problems. We’re still brainstorming ideas for styling the top—I’m currently on the hunt for charming old books at yard sales and perhaps some elegant white vases to complete the look. If there’s enough interest, I’m sure he could dig up the plans for this custom piece!
A Peek at the Pretty Corner: Our Vanity Nook
Just around the corner, you’ll find what I lovingly call “all things pretty” – my dedicated vanity nook. I stumbled upon this desk at a yard sale for a mere $10, along with the accompanying stool. The stool still awaits a fresh recovery, but the desk itself is destined for a charming transformation. I’ve gathered beautiful lace to create a skirt around its base, hoping to give it a more refined, elegant appearance rather than its current “office-ish” vibe. This little corner is where I store my cherished scarves, elegantly displayed on a unique spider hook from Hobby Lobby, adding a touch of personalized charm.

Vintage Charm: Handcrafted Window Treatments and Pillows
Our window treatments and many of the decorative pillows scattered throughout the room are truly special, crafted from vintage hankies and linens. These beautiful pieces were either lovingly thrifted or gifted to me by family members who know my affinity for unique, older items. This approach not only adds a touch of nostalgic charm but also infuses the room with a sense of history and personality that mass-produced items simply can’t replicate. It’s a sustainable way to decorate, breathing new life into forgotten textiles and creating truly one-of-a-kind accents.

Nightstand Lamps: A Bright Transformation
You wouldn’t believe what these crisp white lamps used to look like! They were once rather dated and uninspiring, but with a simple coat of white paint, they’ve been utterly transformed. Now, they perfectly complement our black and white theme, adding a clean, fresh touch to our nightstands. It’s amazing how a little paint can completely refresh an item and integrate it seamlessly into a new design scheme.

Architectural Charm: Board & Batten and Crown Molding
The most significant structural renovation in this room involved the beautiful board and batten wall behind our bed. My talented husband meticulously installed this, adding incredible depth, texture, and a touch of classic architectural detail to the space. Furthermore, he ingeniously incorporated crown molding above the board and batten, transforming it into a functional and decorative shelf. This clever addition provides the perfect display area for cherished frames, flickering candles, and other personal touches, enhancing both the aesthetics and practicality of our bedroom. These elements really anchor the room and give it a custom, high-end feel.

“His” Dresser: A Future Project
While I have my beautifully made-over dresser, my husband’s dresser is still waiting for its moment in the spotlight. It’s a sturdy piece, but it definitely needs something above it to complete the look. I’m envisioning a unique map art installation – perhaps a vintage map of places we’ve visited or dream of exploring. It’s one of those ongoing projects that keeps the creative juices flowing and reminds us that a home is always evolving.

Our Master Bedroom To-Do List: The “Loose Ends”
As much as I adore our transformed master bedroom, a home is a living entity, and there are always a few “loose ends” waiting for attention. My current master bedroom to-do list includes:
- Creating and installing unique map art above my husband’s dresser.
- Lining the dresser drawers for a touch of refined elegance and protection.
- Adding delicate lace accents to the corners of our canopy for a softer, more romantic feel.
- Finding beautiful pearl tie-backs to complement the canopy panels.
- Recovering the vanity stool and finally crafting that lace skirt for the vanity desk.
These small projects are what keep the space feeling fresh and truly personalized, and I’m looking forward to tackling each one!
