DIY Custom Playroom Storage: A Step-by-Step Guide to Building Built-In Cabinets

I’m Jennifer, and I’m delighted to be a guest today from Delightfully Noted, my personal online space where I meticulously document all my DIY adventures and other exciting home projects. Speaking of little ones, I’m also a proud mother to a spirited and lovable boy who, much like many children, has a knack for filling every corner of our home and lives with his ever-expanding collection of toys. Today, I’m incredibly excited to share a DIY project that promises to do more than just help you organize your home; it will also infuse style and enable you to maximize every inch of your wall space efficiently.
Our journey began with converting an underutilized “office” space into a dedicated playroom. This decision was a strategic move to reclaim our living room from a constant state of toy-induced chaos and restore a sense of calm to our daily lives. The office, unfortunately, lacked any built-in closets, quickly highlighting the urgent need to create custom storage solutions. We realized that by incorporating built-in cabinets and shelving, we could truly maximize the room’s square footage and transform it into an organized, joyful space.

Hiring a professional carpenter to achieve this dream was simply not within our budget. So, with a can-do attitude and a desire for personalized storage, we decided to embark on the exciting challenge of building our own built-in cabinets!

Materials Needed for Your DIY Built-In Cabinets:

**Please note: The precise amount of wood and other materials will depend on the specific dimensions of your project and the number of cabinets you plan to install.**
  • 4 standard stock cabinets from a hardware store (adjust quantity based on your wall size)
  • 2 x 4 lumber for framing
  • Wood screws (various lengths)
  • HVAC aluminum foil tape
  • Wood shims for leveling
  • Cabinet mounting screws
  • MDF particle board (for caps, cubbies, and toe kick facade)
  • High-quality primer
  • Paint (we matched the cabinet color for a seamless look)
  • 2.5-inch finishing nails
  • Shelf pegs (if adding adjustable shelving)
  • Baseboard molding
  • Quarter round molding
  • Painter’s caulk
  • Trim wood (optional, for covering gaps)
  • Floor vent register or decorative aluminum sheet (for air duct)
  • Cabinet hardware (optional, but highly recommended for a finished look)

Tools You’ll Need:

  • Measuring tape (essential for accuracy)
  • Prybar
  • Hammer
  • Drill and various bits
  • Stud finder
  • Miter saw
  • Table saw (optional; many hardware stores offer cutting services for MDF boards)
  • Nail Gun (for efficiency and clean finishes)
  • Level (critical for straight and plumb installation)
  • Paint brushes and roller
  • Caulk gun
  • Tin snips (if working with decorative aluminum sheet)

Steps to Building Your Custom Playroom Built-Ins:

1) Measure and Plan Meticulously: This initial step is paramount for a successful project. Dedicate ample time to accurately measure your space and carefully sketch out your design. Remember, the entire built-in unit is constructed around your chosen cabinets, so their arrangement and spacing are critical. My husband and I found it helpful to draw several sketches on sticky notes, allowing us to visualize the layout and ensure we were both on the same page. Don’t forget to account for the exact height of your cabinets, the toe kick, any planned shelves, and the position of existing features like windows. We spent a good deal of time calculating to ensure that the top of our cubbies would align just below the window, reaching an ideal height for a toddler to access. When I say “we,” I primarily mean my husband on the math front – trust me, you wouldn’t want me handling those calculations! Precision here prevents headaches later on.

2) Remove Baseboards and Locate Studs: Begin by carefully removing the existing baseboard from the wall using a pry bar and hammer. Work gently to avoid damaging the wall, as you might want to reuse or replace the baseboard later. Once the baseboard is off, use a stud finder to accurately locate and mark the studs on your wall. These studs will be crucial anchor points for securing your built-in frames, ensuring stability and safety.

3) Construct the Cabinet Platform Frame: This step involves building the foundational platform upon which your cabinets will rest. A key consideration in our project was an existing air duct. To accommodate this, we opted for wall cabinets, which are typically designed to hang above countertops, giving us the flexibility to construct a custom base and toe kick. Using a miter saw, cut your 2x4s to create two separate frames with cross supports: one for the right side of the air duct and one for the left. Each frame should extend the length of your wall up to the edge of the duct. The shorter cross supports should be strategically spaced to match the width of each cabinet, essentially forming the individual bases for each unit. We assembled our frames using wood screws (you’ll notice we had two cross support beams on the right side and only one on the left, simply because that section of our wall was slightly longer). A crucial detail: ensure the frames are built about a quarter-inch *less* than the full depth of your cabinets. This small allowance is vital for the later addition of the toe kick, ensuring that the finished cabinets sit perfectly flush with it. Once constructed, secure these frames firmly to the wall by drilling them directly into the previously marked studs, preventing any movement.

4) Connect the Frames Across the Duct: Measure and cut an additional piece of 2×4 to bridge and connect the two frames, as clearly illustrated in the picture below. This connecting piece should be positioned precisely at the back edge of your air duct return. This step ensures structural integrity and creates a continuous, stable platform for your entire built-in unit.

5) Create a Custom Air Duct Extension: To ensure proper heat and airflow throughout the room once the built-ins are installed, it’s crucial to create a sealed extension for the air duct. We achieved this by using specialized HVAC aluminum foil tape. Carefully and securely tape the wood frame that surrounds the open floor vent. This creates a makeshift, yet effective, duct extension, maximizing the efficiency of your heating and cooling system within the newly transformed space.

6) Install and Secure the Cabinets: Before installation, remove all cabinet doors to make handling easier and prevent damage during the process. Next, begin by screwing your individual cabinets together. For our design, we attached each small cabinet to a taller cabinet, creating unified units. Then, carefully position these assembled cabinet units onto your prepared wooden frames. It’s important to remember that walls are rarely perfectly plumb or flat; they can often have subtle bows. Therefore, before permanently securing them, ensure your cabinets are connected, perfectly level, and flush against each other. Utilize wood shims wherever necessary to achieve ideal alignment. You will find yourself using your level frequently during this phase to guarantee a professional finish. Once you are confident that everything is precisely aligned, level, and plumb, secure the cabinets to the wall by drilling cabinet mounting screws into the wall studs. *Quick tip: While we initially reattached our cabinet doors at this stage, we highly recommend waiting until the very end of the project. You’ll understand why in a later step when dealing with trim and gaps!*

7) Cap Off the Cabinets: To create a smooth, finished surface over your cabinets, measure and cut pieces of MDF particle board to fit precisely on top of each unit. If you don’t own a table saw, remember that many local hardware stores like Home Depot offer cutting services for a small fee, which can save you time and ensure accurate cuts. Before fastening them, prime and paint these MDF boards to match your cabinets for a cohesive look. Once dry, secure them in place using a nail gun, creating a unified and polished top surface.

8) Construct the Cubbie Section: Now, let’s move on to building the open cubbie section. While these instructions might initially seem a bit complex, referring to the image below will clarify everything! For this section, you’ll need to cut seven additional pieces of MDF board, each serving a specific purpose:

  • Board #1: This piece will sit on top of the air duct, effectively filling in the remaining framed area at the base of the cabinets and providing a solid surface.
  • Boards #2 and #3: These are the two vertical dividers positioned in the middle of the cubbie. Their height should be that of the smaller cabinets plus your desired height for the finished open cubbie section.
  • Boards #4 and #5: These two smaller pieces will rest on top of the small cabinets, directly alongside the taller cabinets. They provide crucial support for the long, horizontal top board.
  • Board #6: This is the long, top board that spans across the entire cubbie section, resting on boards #4 and #5 and the top of the adjacent tall cabinets.
  • Board #7: This final piece forms a small, internal shelf within the vertical cubbie section. We added this last, so it’s not visible in the step-by-step image but can be seen in the final reveal photos.

Ensure all these MDF pieces are primed before installation. Once primed and dry, carefully nail them into place using your nail gun to create a sturdy and integrated cubbie unit.

9) Install the Toe Kick: To complete the base of your built-ins and give them a furniture-like finish, you’ll create and install the toe kick. Measure and cut two pieces of baseboard molding, one for each side of the air duct opening. Securely nail these toe kick boards to the base of your cabinets using 2.5-inch finishing nails. This conceals the cabinet bases and integrates the units seamlessly with your floor.

**At this stage, you should ensure the entire inside of the “air duct” pathway, including the underside of the MDF board that caps it, is thoroughly taped with HVAC aluminum foil tape. This complete sealing is critical for optimal heating and cooling efficiency.**

In the next two steps (10 and 11), I want to briefly share the two largest obstacles we encountered during this project and the creative solutions we devised. My hope is that these insights will prove invaluable should you face similar challenges in your own DIY endeavors!
Step 10) Addressing Wall Gaps with Trim: Initially, our plan was to use quarter-round molding to fill the inevitable gap between the new built-in cabinets and the existing wall. However, we quickly discovered that standard quarter-round simply wasn’t wide enough to effectively cover the gap we had.
We brainstormed for weeks, exploring various options, until we finally stumbled upon some incredibly soft and thin trim wood at our local hardware store. This material was a game-changer; it was so pliable that it could easily be cut with a utility blade! If you encounter a similar issue with wall gaps, I highly recommend taking a dedicated trip to your hardware store to explore different trim options. DIY projects often involve a fair amount of trial and error, and being flexible with your material choices can lead to innovative solutions. P.S. Remember my earlier recommendation to wait to reinstall your cabinet doors? This is precisely why! They’ll undoubtedly obstruct your work when you’re trying to fit and secure trim along the wall gap, forcing you to remove them again. Save yourself the double effort!
Step 11) Innovating the Air Duct Vent: Let’s revisit the air duct. Our initial plan involved running the duct slightly above the floor and installing a standard vent grill in the notch we cut into the toe kick. However, our measurements went slightly awry, and we quickly realized that no conventional vent cover on the market would fit our custom opening (and believe me, we searched high and low!). Faced with this unexpected challenge, we decided to improvise. Our brilliant solution came in the form of a decorative aluminum sheet we discovered at Home Depot. We carefully cut it to size using tin snips, spray-painted it to match our decor, and then securely nailed it over the duct opening in the toe kick. The result? What started as a problem turned into a unique design feature – arguably the prettiest vent grill in our entire house! This experience truly highlights the problem-solving spirit inherent in DIY projects.
Step 12) Install Finishing Moldings: To achieve a truly custom and polished appearance, measure and install quarter-round molding. Apply it along the base of the toe kick, making sure to carefully fit it around your custom vent. Additionally, install quarter-round or a similar trim piece along the top of all the cabinets. These finishing touches seamlessly bridge any small gaps and give the entire built-in unit a professionally crafted look.
Step 13) Caulk, Paint, and Hardware: Phew! You’re almost there – now for the crucial final steps that bring everything together. Grab your caulk gun and meticulously caulk around all visible seams and joints throughout the built-in structure. This essential step fills any imperfections and creates smooth, clean lines, making the entire unit look like one solid, custom piece. Next, it’s time to paint the entire unit, ensuring everything is coated in one beautiful, cohesive color. For a perfect match, we took one of our cabinet doors to Home Depot and had them precisely color-match the paint. Finally, and highly recommended for both functionality and aesthetic appeal, add your chosen cabinet hardware. Stylish knobs or pulls will not only make your cabinets easier to open but also elevate the overall design, adding a touch of personality and completing your custom look.
Now, it’s time to step back and thoroughly enjoy your magnificent new custom-looking built-in cabinets!
Just look at the incredible difference this transformation made in our space! While the built-ins were the star, the final touches of cleaning and decorating truly helped to bring the room to life.

I must admit, my absolute favorite outcome of this project was finally having a designated storage place for EVERY. SINGLE. TOY. This transformation has profoundly reduced the chaos in our main living areas. Gone are the days of navigating toy obstacle courses just to reach the living room couch! For an approximate cost of $500, we effectively bought back our sanity. Considering a professional installation could have easily cost us upwards of a thousand dollars, this DIY project was incredibly cost-effective and truly worth every penny.
