Gathering the right materials and tools is the first step to a successful DIY project. For this wood and glass centerpiece, we’ve selected common, easy-to-find items that will yield a sturdy and beautiful result.
Materials:
- (1) 1 x 6 x 48″ Premium Kiln-Dried Square Edge Whitewood Common Board: This will form the base of your planter. Whitewood is a popular choice for its affordability and ease of workability, making it ideal for staining or painting to match your decor.
- (1) 1 x 2 x 96″ Premium Kiln-Dried Square Edge Whitewood Common Board: These smaller boards will be used for the side rails and interior dividers, providing structure and holding your glass vases securely in place.
- (6) 4″ square glass vases (like these): The star of the show! These readily available vases are perfect for holding small plants or other decorative fillers. Ensure they are true 4-inch squares for a snug fit.

- Wood glue: Used in conjunction with brad nails, wood glue provides a much stronger and more durable bond for your joints.
- Wood filler: For concealing nail holes and small imperfections, creating a smooth, professional finish.
- Sandpaper: Various grits for smoothing out rough edges and preparing the wood for any finish.
Cut List for Your Planter Project
Precision in cutting is crucial for a clean, professional-looking centerpiece. Double-check your measurements before making any cuts.
- (1) 1 x 6 @ 30″ (This will be your bottom piece)
- (2) 1 x 2 @ 30″ (These will form the long side rails)
- (7) 1 x 2 @ 4″ (These pieces will serve as the end pieces and internal dividers)
Building Instructions: Step-by-Step Guide to Your Modern Planter
Follow these steps carefully to construct your beautiful wood and glass planter centerpiece. Remember to prioritize safety when using power tools and always wear appropriate protective gear.
1. Prepare the Base Board:
Begin by taking your 1 x 6 board. Using either a miter saw or a circular saw, carefully cut it down to a precise length of 30 inches. This piece will serve as the solid base for your entire centerpiece. Ensure your cut is perfectly square for a stable foundation.
2. Attach the Side Rails:
Next, take the two 1 x 2 boards cut to 30 inches. These will be your side rails. Apply a generous bead of wood glue along the top edges of the 1×6 base board where the rails will sit. Carefully align each 1×2 rail flush with the sides of the base board, positioning them directly on top. Once aligned, use your brad nailer to secure the rails with 1-1/4″ brads, spacing them every few inches. The combination of glue and nails ensures a strong and lasting bond.
3. Integrate the End Pieces:
Now, select two of your 1 x 2 x 4″ pieces. These will form the end caps of your planter. Place one piece between the attached side rails, ensuring it sits flush with one end of the centerpiece. Apply wood glue to the edges that will make contact with the side rails and the base. Secure it firmly in place using 1-1/4″ brads driven from both the ends of the side rails into the end piece, and from the bottom of the base board up into the end piece. Repeat this process for the other end of the planter.
4. Install the Center Dividers:
You should have five 1 x 2 x 4″ pieces remaining. These will act as dividers for your glass vases. Carefully measure and space these center dividers 4-1/8″ apart, starting from one of the end pieces. This spacing is critical to ensure your 4″ glass vases fit snugly but can still be easily inserted and removed. Apply wood glue to the ends and bottom of each divider, then secure them with 1-1/4″ brads driven from the side rails and from the bottom of the base board. Ensure each divider is perpendicular to the side rails for a neat appearance.
5. Finishing Touches – Fill and Sand:
Once all the wooden components are assembled and the glue has dried thoroughly, it’s time to refine your planter. Use wood filler to carefully fill all visible nail holes and any minor seams or gaps in the wood. Allow the filler to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once dry, sand the entire centerpiece until it is smooth to the touch. Start with a medium-grit sandpaper (e.g., 120-grit) to remove any rough spots or excess filler, then move to a finer grit (e.g., 220-grit) for a silky-smooth finish. This step is crucial for a professional look, whether you plan to stain, paint, or leave the wood natural.
6. Plant Your Centerpiece:
Now for the exciting part – filling your planter! Place one of your 4″ square glass vases into each compartment created by the dividers. Since these glass containers typically don’t have drainage holes, it’s a good idea to add a layer of small gravel or decorative stones (about 1-2 inches) at the bottom of each vase before adding soil. This layer helps to create a reservoir for excess water, preventing root rot, which is particularly beneficial for succulents. Fill the vases with appropriate potting soil (a succulent and cactus mix is ideal for succulents), then plant your chosen plants. Carefully arrange them for visual appeal.
Once your plants are settled, place your newly crafted wood and glass centerpiece in its designated spot, and admire your handiwork! Remember to water succulents sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
