From Law Books to Living Rooms: My Journey into Interior Design

My name is Stacy Curran, and I’ve harbored a lifelong passion for decorating—a love that encompasses anything and everything related to creating beautiful, functional spaces. However, my professional path took a rather unexpected detour after college. Instead of immediately pursuing my passion, I found myself embarking on a legal career, a decision often met with curious glances. “Why law school?” is a question I’ve posed to myself countless times, with no clear answer beyond my father’s well-meaning encouragement. At that point in my life, the idea of forging a successful career in interior design seemed a distant dream, an aspiration I hadn’t yet realized could be a viable profession.

I did practice law for several years, and to my own surprise, I was quite proficient at it. My legal training provided a rigorous and valuable foundation for my professional life, for which I remain thankful to my father. Yet, a persistent yearning for creative expression lingered. I reached a pivotal moment where I understood that true happiness for me necessitated a life infused with more artistic endeavors. So, when my son was very young, I made the courageous decision to leave the legal world behind. I immersed myself in the study of design and decorating, refining my skills and knowledge, which ultimately led to the launch of my own business: South Shore Decorating.

This career shift has been, without a doubt, the most fulfilling decision I’ve ever made. I genuinely adore every moment of it. Yet, even amidst the satisfaction of client projects, during quieter periods or late-night hours when my mind buzzed with visions of exquisite rooms, I felt compelled to do more. My deep admiration for decorating blogs, which I follow with keen interest, inspired me to create my own platform. This is how Conspicuous Style came to be. It wasn’t an instantaneous creation; I cycled through at least five other names and no fewer than ten site designs before settling on this identity. But now, I feel firmly rooted in the brand and aesthetic, ready to share my decorating journey and insights with a wider audience.

The Evolution of Our Home: A Chronicle of Style and Transformation

Our home has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis since we acquired it in 2003. We purchased the house brand new, completely unoccupied, after a fleeting 15-minute viewing—a testament to love at first sight, or perhaps just a very quick decision! Consequently, some initial changes were absolutely essential to tailor the builder-grade structure to our family’s needs and preferences. Beyond these foundational adjustments, the house has been a constant canvas for my design explorations, reflecting my passion for continuous redecorating. Over the past eight years, it has been a journey of layering, refining, and reinventing, each phase bringing new life and character to our living spaces. The Heart of the Home: Our Kitchen Transformation

Stepping into the kitchen, this space has truly come a long way from its original builder-grade origins. The cabinets, chosen by the builder, formed a solid base for the room, and I genuinely appreciated their quality and classic design. However, for many years, the kitchen remained in this initial configuration, and I always found myself struggling with one particular detail: the stark, almost startling shade of white paint the builder selected. It felt much too cold and unwelcoming, lacking the warmth and softness I desired for such a central family hub. And looking back, I can’t help but cringe at the artificial flowers that once adorned the space—what was I thinking? It’s a testament to how personal style evolves and how even small details can significantly impact a room’s overall feel.

Last year, I finally embarked on the much-needed kitchen refresh. The most impactful change was repainting the cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s exquisite Cloud White. This softer, warmer white instantly transformed the entire atmosphere, making the kitchen feel more inviting and sophisticated. Complementing this, I swapped out the old chandelier for a more contemporary fixture, and removed the heavy pot rack, which had previously cluttered the space, opting for a cleaner, more streamlined look. To add character and a touch of organic charm, I installed beautiful lanterns sourced from Home Goods above the island. The finishing touch? Fresh greenery clipped from our garden, bringing life and natural elegance to the countertops. These updates collectively created a kitchen that is not only visually appealing but also a joy to spend time in, truly reflecting my personal style.

Elevating the Kitchen Nook: Dining and Architectural Details

My passion for table settings is something I’ll delve into more deeply later in the tour, but for now, I wanted to showcase our inviting kitchen table. This area serves as a casual dining spot, perfect for everyday meals and morning coffee. It’s a space where simplicity meets elegance, often adorned with seasonal touches that make each meal feel a little more special.

Adding architectural interest is a design principle I strongly believe in, and I recently applied this to the kitchen by installing picture frame paneling. While the process itself was undeniably challenging and required significant effort—a true labor of love, if you will—the outcome was absolutely worth it. This classic detailing instantly elevated the space, providing a sophisticated backdrop that ties the room together and enhances its overall charm. It’s these kinds of custom touches that truly transform a house into a home with character.

A Serene Connection: The Living Room

Our living room, situated just off the kitchen, serves as a serene space for relaxation and connection. Interestingly, this room has seen fewer dramatic overhauls compared to other areas of the house. Its foundation was quite pleasing from the start, allowing for more subtle enhancements over time rather than complete transformations. This space exemplifies how well-chosen furniture and a thoughtful layout can endure, providing a consistently comfortable and inviting atmosphere.

While the core structure remained, I introduced strategic updates to breathe new life into the living room. One significant change was transitioning some of the accents from a muted beige palette to refreshing shades of green. This shift instantly brought a sense of vitality and nature indoors, creating a more dynamic and engaging environment. Another impactful update was adding grass cloth wallpaper to the back panels of the bookcases. This textured material not only added depth and a touch of organic elegance but also created a beautiful contrast, making the displayed items pop and giving the built-ins a custom, designer feel. These thoughtful details prove that even minor adjustments can profoundly enhance a room’s character.

The Dining Room: A Blend of Tradition and Unique Finds

The dining room, also conveniently located off the kitchen, has largely maintained a look very similar to when we first moved into the house. This consistency speaks to the timeless appeal of its initial setup. However, the true gems in this space are undoubtedly the dining table and server, both incredible finds I scored on eBay. Can you believe it? These online auction treasures brought character and a sense of history to the room, proving that stunning pieces don’t always come with a hefty price tag or from conventional sources. They inject a unique personality into our dining experience, making it both elegant and wonderfully personal.

To add another layer of charm and functionality, I recently undertook a rewarding DIY project: painting an old desk with chalk paint and repurposing it for the dining room. Chalk paint offers a beautiful matte finish and an aged, characterful look that perfectly complements the traditional aesthetic of the room. This desk now serves as a delightful accent piece, offering both visual interest and a practical surface for displaying decorative items or even for occasional correspondence. It’s a wonderful example of how breathing new life into vintage furniture can add significant personality to a space.

The Family Room: Balancing Aesthetics and Entertainment

The family room, the final space on our first floor, presented a unique design challenge. My goal was to create a warm, inviting environment that looked impeccably styled while simultaneously functioning as a comfortable area for television viewing. The trick was to integrate the television seamlessly without letting it dominate the entire room. Our solution was to place the television discreetly in an armoire, nestled in the back right corner of the room. You can actually spot its reflection in the mirror, hinting at its presence without it being the focal point.

This arrangement means the television is primarily viewable from only three specific seats, a conscious decision we made. While unconventional, it perfectly aligns with our preference for fostering conversation and connection in the family room, rather than solely centering it around screen time. This approach allows the design elements—the furniture, decor, and overall ambiance—to truly shine, creating a space that feels both stylish and genuinely cozy for family gatherings and relaxation. It’s about prioritizing the overall feel and function over simply accommodating a large screen.

The Master Bedroom: A Sanctuary Transformed

The master bedroom was an exciting project, designed remotely from 600 miles away even before we officially moved in. This initial design created a cohesive and comfortable sanctuary using pieces like a Pottery Barn rug for foundational warmth and Smith & Noble bedding and curtains to establish a sophisticated, calming aesthetic. It was a space carefully planned to welcome us into our new home, prioritizing comfort and a timeless appeal.

This year, a strong desire for a zebra print rug took hold. While I initially pondered if such a bold statement piece could work on the main floor, I ultimately decided to embrace it in our master bedroom. Doesn’t everyone just re-do their bedroom on a whim? Haha! My husband, I must admit, was not entirely thrilled with yet another redecoration project. However, the moment that zebra rug found its place, I instantly fell in love. It completely transformed the room, injecting a playful yet sophisticated energy that I absolutely adore. It’s a bold choice that truly expresses a different facet of my evolving design style, creating a space that feels both luxurious and uniquely personal.

Children’s Rooms: Growing with Style

This next room holds a very special place in my heart – it’s the room I meticulously designed for my daughter when she was first born. I truly, deeply loved this room. Every detail, from the color palette to the delicate furnishings, was chosen with such care, creating a serene and enchanting space. I honestly believed I would never change a single thing; it felt perfect in every way, a beautiful nursery filled with innocent charm.

But, alas, as children do, she grew older and developed her own very strong opinions – specifically, she absolutely *had* to have pink! For her birthday last year, I happily conceded to her wish. Here is her room now, resplendent in shades of pink. While I admittedly adored the room before, seeing her face light up with joy makes this current iteration equally wonderful. *She* absolutely loves it, and ultimately, that is what truly matters in creating a child’s personal space. It’s a sweet reminder that design evolves not just with trends, but with the people who inhabit the spaces.

Next, let’s journey back in time to my son’s first room in this house. Unfortunately, this was captured before digital cameras became the standard (at least for me!), so I only have this somewhat mediocre scanned image to share. It’s a charming snapshot of a bygone era, capturing the innocence of his early childhood space, even if the image quality leaves a little to be desired.

As he grew older and, inevitably, became “embarrassed” by his previous room, it was time for another update. We transitioned his space to this more mature and fitting design. It’s a reflection of how children’s rooms truly evolve alongside them, adapting to their changing tastes and needs. This new iteration offers a more sophisticated and age-appropriate environment for him, moving away from childish themes to something he can genuinely appreciate as he gets older.

The Powder Room: A Daring Statement

Our powder room is truly a gem, and currently, it’s the only bathroom in the house that I am completely delighted with. This small space provided the perfect opportunity to be bold and experimental. It’s another room that my husband, bless his heart, doesn’t quite “get,” but I absolutely adore the metallic gold wavy wallpaper. Its shimmering texture and unique pattern create a striking, jewel-box effect that transforms what could be an ordinary utility space into an unexpected moment of luxury and style. It’s a wonderful example of how embracing a daring design choice can bring so much joy and personality to even the smallest areas of a home.

The Lower Level: Basement Entertainment and Recreation

Venturing downstairs, the bottom floor of our home is dedicated to a vibrant basement area that offers multi-functional spaces for family enjoyment and entertainment. This expansive lower level comfortably houses a dedicated media area, perfect for movie nights and gaming. Adjacent to this, you’ll find a lively pool table, providing hours of fun and friendly competition. Completing the setup is an exercise room, ensuring that health and wellness are also integrated into our home’s design. It’s a versatile space designed to cater to various interests and activities, making it a true extension of our family’s living environment.

The Art of Table Setting: Celebrating Moments

One of my absolute favorite creative outlets in terms of decorating is crafting beautiful table settings. There’s something inherently joyful about transforming a simple meal into a special occasion through thoughtful arrangement and seasonal touches. It allows for endless creativity and is a wonderful way to express a mood or celebrate a holiday. I’m delighted to share a few of my favorite table designs that I’ve created in our own home.

First, take a look at our table from last Thanksgiving. For this autumnal celebration, I focused on warm, inviting tones, incorporating natural elements like gourds, rich foliage, and rustic textures. The goal was to create a cozy and abundant feeling, perfect for gathering family and friends to give thanks. The arrangement aimed for elegance without being overly formal, allowing the food and company to be the true stars of the evening.

And here are a couple of our Christmas table settings, designed to capture the festive spirit of the holiday season. For Christmas, I love to play with classic reds, greens, and metallics, bringing in touches of sparkle and traditional holiday cheer. Whether it’s through elegant candelabras, festive linens, or miniature ornaments, each setting aims to create a magical and celebratory atmosphere, making our holiday meals truly memorable. It’s an opportunity to embrace tradition while adding my own unique design flair.

Our Backyard Oasis: An Extension of Home

Finally, but certainly not least, I invite you to see our backyard. This image captures a sweet moment from several years ago, featuring my little girl playing happily near the deck. Our backyard serves as a serene extension of our indoor living spaces, offering a peaceful retreat and a joyful play area.
