Our Ultimate Patio Upgrade: New Sectional Sofa

Transform Your Backyard Oasis: Crafting a DIY Outdoor Sectional Sofa for Ultimate Spring Relaxation

As the long, often harsh winter finally begins to recede, a universal yearning for the outdoors sweeps over us. This year, after an exceptionally snowy season, my anticipation for warmer days was palpable. I distinctly remember the immense relief I felt during Presidents’ Day weekend, basking in the glorious 60-degree weather in St. George, only to return home to an unexpected 18 inches of fresh snow just two days later! It felt like winter was playing a cruel joke. But despite the lingering chill, my spirit is firmly set on spring, and I’m thrilled to share our latest project designed to welcome the sun: a stunning, comfortable DIY outdoor sectional sofa.

The Genesis of Our Backyard Dream: A Deck Built for Living

Our journey to create the ultimate outdoor living space began the very summer we purchased our home. Even before tackling any interior renovations, our priority was to build a spacious deck. Why? Because, in my humble opinion, the true heart of our home lies in its expansive backyard. Adorned with magnificent, mature trees and an abundance of lush greenery, it’s a tranquil retreat that brings me immense joy. Such verdant splendor is a rare gem in the otherwise arid landscape of Utah, making our backyard a truly special sanctuary.

One specific area of our deck, measuring approximately 8 feet by 10 feet on the left side, was always earmarked for a grand vision. From the outset, our goal was to design a large, U-shaped bench or sectional couch that would serve as the central hub for gatherings. We envisioned a space where friends and family could comfortably congregate, share conversations, and simply soak in the beauty of our outdoor haven. However, as is often the case with ambitious home projects, this particular dream remained unfulfilled for quite some time.

(A small confession: Please overlook the current state of our deck wood in the initial photos. We’ve had incredibly challenging luck with deck stains! We applied a supposed five-year product just last July, and it’s already completely compromised. Ugh! We’re facing the daunting task of stripping it all off and starting anew very soon. Thankfully, we later discovered the magic of oil-based finishes. Update: We refinished the deck with oil and absolutely love the results!)

The Long-Awaited Solution: Building Our Dream Outdoor Sectional

For three years, our deck lacked that incredible, inviting couch. It felt like a perpetual “story of my life” moment – a fantastic idea, perpetually on the to-do list. While we previously had some seating (you can see what it used to look like here), it never quite met our desire for expansive, communal seating. But this month, that all changed!

We finally made the decision to build our custom outdoor sectional, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. We had the incredible opportunity to partner with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart to furnish and style this newly created space. The moment we saw their super affordable outdoor cushions, we knew they were the perfect foundation for our entire sofa design. These cushions were not just cost-effective; their quality and aesthetic immediately sparked a flurry of creative ideas.

Today, I’m beyond excited to offer you a sneak peek into how this project has come together. In just a couple of weeks, we’ll be rolling out a comprehensive building tutorial for the DIY sofa itself, so stay tuned for all the construction details!

The Big Reveal: Our Modern DIY Outdoor Sectional Sofa

That empty space you saw earlier? It’s now transformed! I had a blue rug in storage, but it’s not truly outdoor-grade, so my next mission is to find the perfect weather-resistant rug to tie the space together. Moving out our old, inadequate seating and ushering in this new, grand outdoor sectional has been incredibly exhilarating. The excitement is almost too much to handle!

Our design philosophy for this sofa/daybed was to keep it super low-profile. I specifically didn’t want it to be too tall, obstructing the beautiful view of our yard or hindering my ability to keep an eye on the kids playing. Beyond functionality, I was eager to experiment with a modern, sleek aesthetic, and I genuinely believe we hit the jackpot with this design. The core of this comfort comes from the incredible cushions from the Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart line. I opted for a super neutral color palette for the main cushions because I love to frequently change out throw pillows, rugs, and other accessories. This neutral base provides a versatile canvas, ensuring I’m never “stuck” with a color scheme that feels dated or difficult to update.

One of the brilliant aspects of this design is its modularity. We created two separate sofa units that can be configured together to form a large sectional or pulled apart to function as individual seating pieces. Both arrangements work perfectly, offering flexibility for different occasions and guest numbers. In fact, my husband wasted no time in testing it out the moment it was assembled – a true testament to its immediate appeal and comfort!

Now, all I need is for the trees to fully leaf out, and our backyard will be a complete paradise! An added bonus of this sofa design: when we’re not using the cushions, we can easily slide them underneath the frame. This ingenious storage solution keeps them protected from the elements – and occasionally, from our mischievous neighbor’s cats!

Styling Your Outdoor Oasis: Decor and Thoughtful Details

Instead of traditional seat-back cushions, we opted for a more dynamic and easily changeable approach with a variety of throw pillows. This choice allows for endless styling possibilities and adds layers of texture and comfort. I particularly adore one specific pillow, though I couldn’t find a direct link for it, you can explore other cool outdoor pillow sets here from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart.

I love how the pillows create an inviting grouping in the corner, complemented by a soft chenille throw. This throw is perfect for those cooler spring evenings when there’s still a slight nip in the air, ensuring maximum comfort for extended outdoor enjoyment.

Our plants are currently awaiting their permanent homes in pots. It’s still too cold for them to stay outside overnight, so they make nightly trips indoors until the weather truly warms up. I’m excited to get them properly potted soon, and I’m especially fond of these lightweight containers, also from the Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart collection. They offer both style and practicality, making them perfect for our outdoor space.

Finally, to add a touch of rustic charm and visual interest to the back of the house, we brought out our DIY pallet wood blanket ladder. It’s a simple yet effective piece that ties into the natural aesthetic of our backyard retreat.

Okay, just one more shot – taken from my phone! Because let’s be honest, nighttime, once the kids are tucked into bed, is truly prime deck time. There’s something magical about enjoying this space under the stars, especially with the soft glow of ambient lighting.
