Transforming the “Blank Slate” — A Reader’s Challenge
READER QUESTION from Kelly —
“We just recently bought a new house and I could really use some suggestions to improve the curb appeal (paint colors, etc.). It is pretty much a blank slate.”
Kelly’s submission immediately captured my attention this month. Why? Because her beautiful new home, a classic brick ranch, perfectly embodies what I often refer to as a “blank slate.” Many homeowners find themselves in a similar situation: a perfectly functional and well-maintained house, but one that lacks distinctive character or immediate visual appeal. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it, and certainly no pressing issues that *need* fixing. Yet, it feels a bit uninspired, failing to truly welcome or engage the eye. This absence of unique touches can make an otherwise lovely home blend into the background instead of standing out. Our goal is to infuse personality and warmth, elevating its curb appeal to create a memorable first impression.
Seeking Inspiration for an Inviting Exterior
To kickstart the design process for Kelly’s home, I embarked on a search for inspiring images that resonated with the potential of her brick ranch. Gathering diverse examples helps to define a cohesive vision and explore various elements that could enhance the home’s existing structure. Here are a few examples that fueled my creative approach:

With this wealth of inspiration in mind, I began the exciting process of transforming Kelly’s blank slate house. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the enhancements I envisioned for her home:
Curb Appeal Updates for Kelly’s Brick Ranch: A Virtual Makeover
The primary design challenge with many “blank slate” homes, including Kelly’s charming brick ranch, is the presence of significant unadorned areas. These large, uninterrupted expanses of siding and brick often lack architectural features or decorative elements to break them up. The result can be an exterior that feels somewhat overwhelming, cold, and less inviting. In Kelly’s case, the expansive brick wall, while sturdy and classic, inadvertently makes the windows appear smaller and somewhat lost within the vast surface.
To address this, my strategy focused on introducing visual interest and strategically dividing these large, flat surfaces. Here’s how we can achieve a more dynamic and welcoming facade:
1. Adding Decorative Shutters and a Pop of Color
Shutters are an ideal way to inject both color and architectural detail into an otherwise plain home, especially one featuring narrower windows like Kelly’s. I selected a refreshing robin’s egg blue for the shutters, a color that harmonizes beautifully with the warm tones of the brickwork without overpowering it. This cool blue offers a sophisticated contrast, creating a balanced and appealing color palette. The front door was painted to match the shutters, effectively tying the entire entryway together. Furthermore, I proposed updating the siding color from its original yellowish hue to a softer, more contemporary very light gray. This neutral backdrop allows the blue accents to truly shine. To extend this cool, inviting theme onto the porch, a few fun throw pillows on the chairs and a welcoming door mat featuring complementary colors would effortlessly connect the exterior decor.
2. Enhancing the Entryway with a Porch Railing
The existing porch area, while functional, lacked definition. Adding a railing serves multiple purposes: it clearly delineates the entrance, creating a more structured and intentional feel. Aesthetically, the railing introduces crucial horizontal lines, which are vital for breaking up the dominance of vertical elements such as the columns, the front door, sidelights, and windows. Given the inherently horizontal nature of ranch-style homes, incorporating another strong horizontal element helps to balance the overall composition, adding a sense of stability and traditional charm.
3. Incorporating Charming Window Boxes
To further address the vast brick areas and enhance the scale of the windows within them, I added elegant window boxes. These are not merely decorative; they serve to add intricate detail to the home’s facade and introduce vibrant splashes of color at an elevated level. This subtle addition helps to visually connect these windows to the more substantially trimmed windows and door on the porch, creating a unified and more detailed exterior aesthetic. Beyond aesthetics, window boxes offer an opportunity for seasonal planting, allowing homeowners to easily refresh their curb appeal throughout the year.
4. Thoughtful Landscaping for Softness and Privacy
Once the architectural details were in place, the final layer of transformation involved strategic landscaping. The goal was to soften the home’s lines and introduce organic beauty. I kept the majority of the plantings low to the ground, ensuring they didn’t obscure the newly added architectural features. However, a few taller bushes were strategically placed around the porch area. These taller plantings serve a dual purpose: they enhance privacy, making the porch feel more like a secluded, cozy outdoor room, and they add varying heights and textures to the landscape design. To further amplify the welcoming vibe and introduce additional color and life directly onto the house, I included hanging baskets on the porch. These create an immediate, inviting first impression, drawing the eye upwards and completing the layered look of the exterior.
This comprehensive approach – combining thoughtful architectural additions with strategic landscaping – transforms Kelly’s blank slate into a home with character, warmth, and undeniable curb appeal. Each element works in harmony to create a cohesive and inviting exterior that truly reflects the potential of her beautiful brick ranch.
