Next on my list of favorites is Purdue University’s In Home, a design that thoughtfully merges sustainability with conventional aesthetics.

What truly distinguishes this home is its remarkably approachable exterior. While I personally admire the sleek lines of modern architecture, many people find it challenging to envision themselves living in such a contemporary design. Purdue’s In Home brilliantly addresses this by presenting a very traditional, almost classic look, making sustainable living feel accessible and familiar without “sticking out” in a neighborhood. This design strategy is key to broadening the appeal of green homes beyond a niche market.

A practical and highly desirable feature of this home is its integrated plastic rainwater collector. My partner Justin and I have long considered implementing a similar system, perhaps by repurposing a few plastic barrels to create a rainwater harvesting station near our garden. Such a system offers immense benefits: it conserves municipal water, reduces utility bills, and provides a sustainable source of irrigation for plants, especially valuable in areas prone to drought or with water restrictions. It’s a simple yet impactful step towards greater self-sufficiency and environmental responsibility.

Speaking of gardens, another innovative feature that I absolutely adore is the vertical indoor “bio wall.” This living plant filtration system is designed to retain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and significantly improve indoor air quality, all while contributing to energy savings. This design makes it easier for homeowners to implement a scaled-down version of a bio wall, bringing the benefits of indoor gardening and air purification into their own spaces. As someone who enjoys caring for plants—a passion I likely inherited from my green-thumbed mother—I find the prospect of watching a wall of fresh produce flourish incredibly satisfying.

Finally, the last house I want to highlight is the University of Maryland’s Watershed, which was the overall winner of the competition. Its comprehensive approach to sustainability truly sets it apart.

While the aesthetic appeal of this house is undeniable, it’s the ingenious concept behind its “butterfly wing roofs” that truly fascinates me. These uniquely shaped roofs are designed to efficiently collect runoff rainwater, directing it into an integrated wetland system. This wetland then serves a crucial function: recycling greywater from showers, clothes washers, and dishwashers, purifying it into water suitable for garden use. This closed-loop water system represents a significant step forward in water conservation, drastically reducing municipal water consumption and creating a more self-sufficient home ecosystem.

The Watershed also features a sophisticated green roof, carefully lined with a durable plastic membrane. Green roofs are celebrated for their multifaceted benefits: they provide superior insulation, which helps regulate indoor temperatures and reduces energy consumption for heating and cooling. Furthermore, they play a crucial role in stormwater management by absorbing rainfall and mitigating runoff issues, thereby easing the strain on urban drainage systems. This home also brilliantly integrates a garden directly off the kitchen, fostering a farm-to-table lifestyle and creating a seamless connection between indoor comfort and outdoor natural beauty.

Oh, and speaking of the kitchen – did you happen to notice it? I’m completely enamored with its design, especially the recycled concrete countertops, a feature I’ve coveted for years! This choice not only provides a stunning, durable surface but also embodies the principles of circular economy and repurposing materials in home design.

Beyond its structural innovations, the Watershed embraces practical solutions for everyday sustainability, such as the use of a plastic tumbling compost bin. My partner Justin and I have longed for one of these for years. Currently, we use compost boxes built from recycled fence posts, which, frankly, are barely holding together and demand far more maintenance than their modern plastic counterparts. These highly efficient tumbling units can produce nutrient-rich compost in as little as 14 days, a stark contrast to the six months or more our current system requires. The compact design and simple crank mechanism make them incredibly easy to operate, eliminating the strenuous manual digging associated with traditional composting methods. I’m even considering getting one for my mother, who is a true gardening genius, knowing how much she would appreciate its efficiency and ease of use.
