An Affordable Master Bath Transformation by Courtney of Golden Boys and Me

Elegant Master Bath Remodel

Courtney shares her journey of transforming a dated and dysfunctional bathroom into a stunning and serene master retreat. Facing the challenge of an outdated 80s decor in their newly purchased home, Courtney and her husband, Billy, embarked on a mission to infuse their home with charm and style on a tight budget.

With three boys and a priority on a great school system, the focus was on making the house a home through affordable DIY projects. From an Ikea Hack Kitchen Island to repurposing Ikea bookshelves into a small mudroom, Courtney’s resourcefulness shines through.

The master bathroom presented a unique challenge: an awkward combination of a vanity area and a small, cramped bathroom separated by a door. The space was inefficient and uninviting. The goal was to create a unified, elegant, and functional master bath without a massive budget.

Before the Transformation: A Glimpse of the “Before”

The “before” photo reveals the tight, compartmentalized space that needed a complete overhaul. It highlights the importance of envisioning the potential for a more open and luxurious layout.

The Mood Board: Planning the Elegant Escape

Courtney’s mood board served as a roadmap for the project, showcasing the desired aesthetic: a bright, white, and elegant space. While some elements evolved during the process (like opting for white tile instead of wood-look tile), the overall vision remained consistent.

The Remodel Process: From Demolition to Delight

The renovation began with knocking down the wall separating the vanity area and the small bathroom, as well as removing both closets. This immediately created a more spacious 11ft by 8ft master bathroom. By keeping the plumbing in its original location, they minimized costs and maximized efficiency.

The walls were painted in Sherwin Williams Sea Salt, a serene and calming color that sets the tone for relaxation. Prefinished beadboard, purchased at Home Depot, was installed on both the ceiling and walls, adding texture and a touch of classic elegance.

To address the loss of linen closet storage, custom built-in shelves were added around the door. This clever solution provides ample storage without sacrificing valuable floor space. The lighting fixtures, sourced from HomeDepot.com (Waterton sconces) and Overstock.com (chandelier), add both functionality and visual appeal.

Shower Details: Functionality Meets Affordability

Billy, Courtney’s husband, added a niche into the shower wall before tiling. This simple addition creates a convenient storage space for toiletries without cluttering the shower area. The sliding shower doors, purchased online at Costco.com, were a significant cost-saving measure. While frameless shower doors were desired, custom-made panels would have consumed half of the entire budget. The chosen glass and shower base came in at under $1,000, proving that you can achieve a high-end look without the premium price tag.

The acrylic tub, along with the faucets for both the tub and shower, were sourced from Vintage Tub and Bath, adding a touch of vintage charm to the modern space.

Mirror, Mirror: Adding a Touch of Glamour

The mirrors, a lucky find at Lowes, were the perfect complement to the double vanity. Courtney had admired similar mirrors with a much higher price tag in the past, making this find a delightful surprise. The mirrors add a touch of elegance and sophistication to the overall design.

The Final Result: A Bright and Serene Retreat

The finished master bathroom is a testament to Courtney and Billy’s hard work, creativity, and dedication to creating a beautiful and functional space on a budget. The bright and airy atmosphere, combined with elegant fixtures and thoughtful details, transforms the bathroom into a true retreat.

Courtney emphasizes that the white color scheme is surprisingly easy to maintain, and the bathroom has become a cherished space for relaxation and rejuvenation.
