This year, embarking on an exciting collaboration with our cherished partners at Shaw Floors, I’m thrilled to be a part of their much-anticipated fall home tour. Now, before you conjure images of perfectly styled, picture-book rooms, I must confess my part in this grand reveal will be a tad… focused. For me, this fall tour spotlights our front room, a space that, unlike the rest of my house which is currently in a beautiful state of organized chaos (a true remodel-a-holic’s natural habitat!), has emerged from its construction cocoon.
Those familiar with my journey know that “ripping things out” is practically my mantra, a passion that often leaves parts of my home in perpetual transformation. While my entire house might not be ready for its close-up, the opportunity to share a refined glimpse of even one space, especially in partnership with Shaw Floors, is incredibly rewarding.
For those craving a breathtaking, comprehensive home showcase, I highly recommend visiting Addison’s Wonderland’s historic fall home tour from yesterday. Her talent for whole-home staging is truly inspiring!
Allow me to share a little secret: I’m not inherently a “decorator.” My design sensibilities lean towards the quirky, preferring curated minimalism over cluttered surfaces. When it comes to holidays, my decorating enthusiasm typically peaks at Christmas. Don’t misunderstand; I’m all in for donning a ridiculous costume for Halloween, but beyond that, the intricate world of seasonal embellishments isn’t my primary passion. Truth be told, I’d rather be knee-deep in a renovation project, tearing down walls and optimizing floor plans for better functionality. This preference often explains why my home frequently finds itself in a state of productive upheaval.
So, with that honest admission off my chest, let’s talk about a specific area that often challenges even the most seasoned home stylists: the mantel.
Transforming Our Living Room Mantel: A Fall Refresh Story
For too long, our mantel had become an unintended repository for miscellaneous items, a place where decorative aspirations seemed to quietly fade. While there were certainly pieces I genuinely liked, it often accumulated random trinkets deposited by “people” – and by that, I mean my wonderfully sweet, albeit slightly disorganized, family. And yes, I confess, I often simply overlooked these additions. (Not my family, mind you, but the random items they placed there!).

You’re welcome. It was, shall we say, a work in progress.
It was evident that both the room and, more specifically, the mantel needed a fresh perspective. The foundational elements of our front room – the wall colors, the existing furniture, and especially our beloved area rug – remained cherished and integral to the space. I genuinely adore the core finishes we’ve chosen for this room, and they continue to inspire its character. Our custom area rug from Shaw Floors, in particular, has been a cornerstone of our living room’s comfort and style since day one.
The Heart of Our Home: Our Custom Tuftex Rug from Shaw Floors
The rug, a stunning piece from Tuftex, a premium division of Shaw Floors, isn’t just any carpet; it’s a testament to thoughtful design and customization. Tuftex specializes in offering high-quality, luxurious carpets, and their custom rug program is an absolute game-changer for homeowners looking for that perfect fit. This program allows you to select any Tuftex carpet style you fall in love with and have it expertly cut and bound to the precise dimensions your space demands. This means no more settling for off-the-rack sizes that don’t quite fill the room or leave awkward gaps.
Our living room boasts the Tuftex “Only Natural” style in the sophisticated “Chateau” shade. This choice was deliberate, as its neutral tones and plush texture perfectly complement our existing decor while providing a soft, inviting foundation for the room. The true beauty of this custom option lies in its versatility; not only did we achieve an exact fit, but Tuftex also offers a diverse array of colors and patterns within their premium carpet lines, ensuring there’s a perfect match for every aesthetic. Investing in a custom area rug like ours from Tuftex means bringing unparalleled comfort, durability, and tailored elegance into your home, transforming any room into a more cohesive and welcoming environment. It truly is an outstanding area rug solution that we wholeheartedly recommend for its quality and bespoke potential.
A Quick Fall Mantel Makeover: From Drab to Delightful
With a clear vision and a mere 20 minutes to spare, I embarked on a rapid mantel transformation. The first step involved a thorough cleaning and clearing of all the accumulated items. However, there was one element I intentionally kept: the DIY plywood pennants. I still love their rustic charm, and I felt they offered a subtle, yet fitting, nod to fall. Plus, they’re a fun, easy project you can create yourself using the link provided – wink wink, nudge nudge! (Okay, I promise, no more rhyming now, I mean it!).

My core design decision for this fall mantel involved incorporating a mirror. Mirrors are fantastic for adding depth, reflecting light, and creating a sense of spaciousness, especially in a living room. I chose this elegant (affiliate link) Kenitra mirror by Uttermost for its unique design and subtle frame, which I felt would complement the existing decor without overpowering the space.

Now, I can almost hear all you symmetry enthusiasts out there collectively groaning or perhaps even cursing my design choice! I understand, truly I do. Centering the mirror was my initial thought, but upon placing it, the composition just didn’t feel right. Sometimes, breaking a conventional rule like perfect symmetry can lead to a more interesting and dynamic arrangement. The off-center placement created a better visual balance with the other elements I planned to introduce. Trust me, it’s going to come together beautifully!
To create a striking contrast and help elements pop, I consciously gravitated towards a few light-colored decorative items. These would stand out brilliantly against our painted black brick fireplace, adding layers of visual interest and highlighting the textures and forms of each piece.

Throughout the styling process, I found myself repeatedly stepping back from the mantel. This isn’t just for dramatic effect or making silly faces at the camera (though that definitely happens!). It’s a crucial step in home decor: observing from different angles, understanding the scale, balance, and overall flow. It allows for adjustments, ensures elements complement each other, and helps you achieve a cohesive look that feels just right. It’s all about trusting your eye and making those small, iterative tweaks until the arrangement sings.

And finally, here is the mantel, beautifully finished and ready for fall.

Embracing Seasonal Decor: A Remodel-A-Holic’s Revelation
The unexpected moral of this story? I think I might just start decorating for holidays a bit more often. I know, I spent the beginning of this post lamenting my lack of enthusiasm and even complaining a little, mostly because I’ve always felt I wasn’t particularly skilled at it. My comfort zone has always been the structural, the transformative, the core elements of a home, not the ephemeral layers of seasonal decor.
BUT, stepping into this room now, with its refreshed and tastefully adorned mantel, is an entirely different experience. Every time I walk in, I am genuinely and pleasantly surprised, a little bit cheered, and filled with a sense of cozy satisfaction. It’s a small change that has made a significant impact on the overall feel of the space, making it more inviting and aligned with the warmth of the autumn season. This newfound appreciation for seasonal styling is quite a revelation for a self-proclaimed remodel-a-holic like myself. Perhaps we could all use a little more holiday cheer thoughtfully woven into our everyday spaces, right?
