Reader Spotlight: Clever DIY Projects by Doug: We absolutely adore seeing your creative projects and how you adapt our tutorials to fit your unique needs! This week, we’re thrilled to feature two outstanding projects from our talented reader, Doug, who drew inspiration directly from Remodelaholic tutorials. (Don’t hesitate to share your own amazing work with us here!) Doug’s first project is an incredibly clever hidden Christmas tree storage console table, inspired by our plywood storage box tutorial. Facing the perennial challenge of storing an artificial Christmas tree, Doug designed and built a console table that ingeniously conceals the entire tree within! It features a faux shelf on top for additional storage and a hinged lid for effortless access. This smart, custom solution not only solves a common seasonal storage dilemma but also adds a stylish piece of furniture to his home year-round.
From Doug: “My wife wanted an artificial Christmas tree, but I did not have anywhere I could store it. So inspired by the projects you feature, I kinda came up with my own mixture of the two, along with matching my home goods end tables. I think it worked out nicely, tree fits great under the faux shelf. The specs are 30″ floor to top, box depth of 24″, it is 20″ wide and 63″ in total overall length. It is made from Birch 1/2 ply, pine select board, less knots. I took the specs from the sizing on the box the tree came in and enlarged them some for the extra storage above the tree. It will work out well when putting the tree back up, it will be used for the storage of all the seasonal knick knacks.”
In addition to his innovative Christmas tree storage, Doug also crafted a smaller, elegant end table version, drawing inspiration from our double X console table design. The resulting piece is a testament to his craftsmanship and attention to detail, seamlessly blending functionality with a refined aesthetic.
