Here are the specific boards you’ll need to gather for this project:

• (1) – 2”x3”x8’ board (actual dimensions: 1 ½” x 2 ½”)
• (1) – 2”x2”x8’ board (actual dimensions: 1 ½” x 1 ½”)
• (1) – 2”x10”x8’ board* (actual dimensions: 1 ½” x 9 ¼”)

*Note: The 2″x10″x8′ board will serve as your benchtop. While the actual dimensions are slightly smaller, always purchase lumber by its nominal size.

While not strictly essential, several additional tools can significantly simplify and improve your building experience. A brad nailer can be incredibly helpful for temporarily holding pieces in place before permanent screw fastening. Clamps are always useful for holding workpieces steady, and a carpenter’s square will ensure your angles are perfectly true. And of course, don’t forget your trusty tape measure and a pencil for accurate marking!

Here’s a breakdown of the steps to achieve this stunning finish:

1. First Stain Layer: Begin by randomly layering two different colors of wood stain onto your prepared wood surfaces. Don’t strive for perfection at this stage; the randomness contributes to the rustic appeal.
2. Blend the Stains: While the stains are still wet, use a clean cloth or brush to gently blend the two colors together. This creates a seamless transition and adds depth to the wood grain.
3. Whitewash Application: Next, apply a light whitewash over the stained wood. The whitewash will settle into the grain, softening the stain colors and providing that characteristic weathered, farmhouse look. Blend it in smoothly for an even effect.
4. Dry Brush Technique: To complete the aged finish, use a dry brush technique. This involves applying a very small amount of paint (usually a contrasting color or a lighter shade of your base stain) to a dry brush and lightly skimming it across the surface. While the originals featured intricate mortise and tenon joints, I thoughtfully modified the design to create an incredibly easy build, ensuring that anyone with basic woodworking skills could recreate this elegant piece without the advanced joinery.

I genuinely think it turned out absolutely perfect! The addition of the sturdy center supports makes the bench not only aesthetically pleasing but also incredibly nice and sturdy, capable of holding up to regular use in any setting. It’s a testament to simple design combined with smart construction.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be donating this beautifully crafted bench to my daughter’s brand new dance studio. It’s a wonderful feeling to contribute a handmade piece to a place that will bring so much joy to children. I’ve also been contemplating building a few counter-height versions of this bench for my own dining table, as my current chairs are reaching the end of their lifespan – but we’ll see what the future holds for my next project!
