The steps below follow the order of the work for this decor project.

Handmade Curtain Hanging Options
For a non-traditional look, try using knobs, nails, or hooks hung above the window to loop curtains over. (This works best for curtains which are decorative and not functional, such as when you have a shade beneath to control the light and just need curtains for decor.)

Or you can create a rustic or nautical feel by using rope as a curtain rod!

You can upcycle a yardstick as a curtain rod:

Or it works great as a valance on a lower window, too!

An old rowing oar adds character to any window! well fitted for an outdoors or nautical room.

A branch can be the FREE curtain rod you’ve been dreaming of. Leave it au naturale for a rustic look

or paint it for a different look:

or you can use something a little sleeker but still natural, like bamboo (and use rope to hang it and jute as your curtain rings!)

Or give an old fence rail new life by welding on a new finial! (Instructions here)

For a very obviously industrial look, just change up the mounting hardware and finial style like this:

or use some vintage corbels and attach your industrial curtain rod for a lovely salvaged look:

Make the industrial look much more modest-cost friendly by using PVC! (Yes, that is plastic painted pipe! See more solid PVC projects here.)

Similarly, Stephanie Lynn used a wooden dowel and finials, plus some wood corbels for this look:

Diane over at In My Own Style used PVC pipe to and finials to make this curtain rod:

or she flexed her creative muscle and used a tennis ball to make the finials on this one!
