25 Inspiring Exterior Window Treatments
Putting up exterior window treatments such as shutters and window boxes can beautify your home while adding some practical benefits. On top of curb appeal (both through flowers and paint colors), awnings and closable shutters can help keep the house cool and shield windows from the elements.

Shutters
Shutters can be functional, especially if you live in a high storm area. But decorative shutters are a fairly quick and inexpensive way to dress up your exterior windows. You can buy premade shutters in a variety of materials at your local home improvement store, or you can easily Handmade them as well! We just shared the walkthrough for building our cottage style board and batten wood shutters:

Thrifty Decor Chick shows you how she made both her window shutters and her window boxes from old fence posts.

The girls at East Coast Creative made their shutters and a variation of a window box — a shelf with holes for plant pots!

Give your windows character like Hello Newmans did with these tall thin window shutters.

And, hello, solid window shutters! Mandi from Vintage Revivals shows you how to make these chevron/herringbone wooden window shutters:

And look at these memorable barn door style shutters! I love me some barn doors…

Awnings
Awnings typically manage to work double-duty, adding curb appeal while also filtering the sunlight that comes into your home and protecting your windows from the elements. Traditional cloth awnings come in a variety of sizes and styles, but a wood awning is striking!

Window Boxes
Window boxes are straightforward to build yourself and add both character and color when you fill them with striking flowers! I shared a few links to tutorials above, and here are some of my go-to less-than-boxy window boxes. Having separate flower pots makes it straightforward to bring your blooms inside and help them flourish year-round!

What kind of outdoor window treatment do you have on your home? I love our shutters, but my (new) windows could sure use a good cleaning before winter hits (like Handmade Divas teach here)… How about yours?
