Thrifted Picture Frame Turned Chalkboard, Mom 4 Real on #Bekob

Hey there, Bekob peeps! It’s Jessica from Mom 4 Real, back to share another $20 or less thrifted project! Last month, I shared a clearly straightforward Handmade Night Light, and this month, I am sharing one of my go-to projects ever…a Thrifted Picture Frame Turned Chalkboard! I have been turning mirrors into chalkboard for years, as I’ll show you at the end of this post, and it is truly one of the easiest, yet most rewarding projects I do! Let me show you how straightforward it is…

Picture Frame Chalkboard and Corkboard

You’ll need the following supplies:

An old picture frame or mirror

Primer

Chalkboard Paint

Your choice of paint for your frame

A Paint Brush

Wine corks if you want to take it a step further and add a cork border. (You will also need a hot glue gun for this step)

First, take the glass out of your frame. If you are working with an old mirror, you may not be able to remove it, so you will need to be careful painting. Paint your frame in the color of your choice. I am an aquaholic, so that’s what I went with. Paint your glass with one to two coats of primer and let dry.

Once the primer has dried, paint 3-4 thin coats of chalkboard paint on the primed surface, allowing for drying time in between each coat. A little chalkboard paint goes a long way!

Once the final coat of chalkboard paint has dried, place your chalkboard painted glass back in the frame and secure it with the backing from the frame. At this point, you can be finished, or you can go one step further and turn it into a cork board as well.

Just take your old wine corks (which can be bought at most craft stores if you are not a wine drinker), and place them in some sort of pattern, hot glueing them directly to the chalkboard all the way around the frame. Don’t worry about all of the glue strings…at the end of the project, you can take a hair dryer and give it a couple of blasts, and the glue strings will melt away!

My little cork chalkboard is the well fitted addition to my little breakfast nook office!

Price breakdown for my project:

Frame – $2.50 at Goodwill

Americana Chalkboard Paint – $2.00 at Michaels Craft Store (or you can also buy a larger bottle here on Amazon)

Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint – Already had. Any acrylic paint can be used for around $1 – $2

Primer – Already had in Garage. You can buy primer in spray form in the spray paint section of Home Depot or Lowe’s for around $5 or buy a quart for anywhere between $8-$13.

Here is a little peak of two mirrors that I turned into chalkboards…
