Our 1970’s Fireplace Remodel: A New Mantel & Airstone Surround

Like many homeowners, we inherited a living room fireplace that, while functional, simply didn’t align with our vision for the larger home renovation. As we meticulously remodeled our Jordan House, we were determined to preserve this central feature, but it desperately needed a stylistic overhaul.

When we removed walls to create an open-concept main level, connecting the living room and kitchen, the once all-white fireplace suddenly felt swallowed by the expansive new wall. Additionally, the raised hearth, a common feature of its era, seemed to unnecessarily infringe upon the new open space we were striving to create.

Jordan House Fireplace Remodel Before: Dated White Fireplace with Raised Hearth

To integrate the fireplace seamlessly into the new, modern aesthetic of our home, we embarked on a comprehensive fireplace and mantel remodel. Our transformation process included several key steps:

  1. First, we carefully removed the outdated tile surround and the obtrusive raised hearth, opening up the space.
  2. Next, we modernized the existing wood surround and mantel by adding fresh craftsman/shaker style trim molding, giving it a clean, contemporary edge.
  3. To add architectural interest and height, we installed a plank shiplap “faux chimney” wall extending from above the fireplace all the way to the ceiling, then painted both it and the newly trimmed wood mantel for a cohesive look.
  4. Finally, we installed a new, elegant inlaid tile hearth and an Airstone faux stone fireplace surround, bringing texture and sophistication to the entire structure.

The result is a stunning, beautifully remodeled modern gray mantel and stone fireplace surround. It now confidently stands as a captivating focal point in our open living room, perfectly complementing the home’s updated style.

Bold Black Painted Brick Fireplace + New Wood Mantel

Dramatic black painted brick fireplace wall with an easy DIY wood mantel by Remodelaholic

When we first moved into our 1970s rambler, the Birch House, I was immediately drawn to the unique, beautiful curved brickwork of the enormous fireplace wall. It truly showcased a craftsmanship rarely found in modern homes. However, the existing brick color was a distinctly dated brown that muted its potential. To breathe new life into it, we painted the entire brick structure a sophisticated black, instantly transforming its presence. Complementing this bold change, we then added the simplest possible DIY wood mantel, which brought warmth and definition to the space.
