How to Build an Upright Utensil Drawer Organizer
by Rachel Lynn from Queen Bee of Honey Dos
Hello Remodelaholics! It’s Rachel Lynn here from Queen Bee of Honey Dos, where I share my passion for all things home and garden. I am absolutely thrilled to join you today and present one of my most satisfying DIY projects. It’s a solution that not only tackles a common kitchen challenge but also brings a touch of custom elegance to everyday living.
For those new to my work, let me briefly introduce myself. My enthusiasm for DIY runs deep, particularly when it comes to projects that deliver maximum impact with minimal budget. My journey into blogging follows decades of hands-on experience in remodeling and designing my own spaces. I have a special love for creating furniture, whether it’s building from scratch or breathing new life into forgotten pieces, much like the process for this beautifully refinished sideboard.
As you can observe from my kitchen layout, I am a firm believer in the power of drawers. In fact, the entire lower section of my kitchen cabinetry is designed with a thoughtful combination of drawers and pull-outs. This preference stems from a desire for optimal organization and accessibility, a philosophy that guided me in transforming one of my deep drawers into a highly functional utensil storage space. This project exemplifies how a little creativity and DIY effort can dramatically improve kitchen efficiency. So, without further ado, let’s get started!
With deep drawers strategically placed on both sides of my cooktop, it was the ideal spot to store all my essential cooking utensils. However, the frustration of constantly sifting through a jumbled drawer, desperately searching for a specific spatula or serving spoon, quickly became unbearable. I knew there had to be a better way. I remembered seeing a similar, elegant vertical storage solution during a high-end kitchen showroom tour years ago. The image of perfectly organized utensils, standing upright and visible, stuck with me. I vowed then that I would recreate that functionality in my own kitchen, and the time felt right. You’ll be amazed at how straightforward this transformation truly is!
How to Create This Deep Drawer Utensil Organizer
This image illustrates the exact location of the drawer in proximity to my cooktop, highlighting the practical placement for cooking utensils. For those curious about appliance specifics – a common inquiry among my readers – I’m happy to share the details. My professional-grade kitchen features Thermador Pro double ovens and a Thermador Pro gas cooktop, complete with a convenient griddle center. These appliances are chosen for their performance and durability, creating a truly functional cooking environment.
The beautiful cabinetry, a key element of my kitchen’s design, originates from Batesville Cabinets in Mississippi. Please note that I have no affiliation with either Thermador or Batesville Cabinets; I simply share this information for transparency and informational purposes, as I know these details are often helpful for those planning their own kitchen upgrades. The overall design, from layout to specific features, is entirely my own conception, a testament to the power of personalized home design.
Materials and Tools for This Project
Before embarking on any DIY endeavor, gathering the right materials and tools is paramount. For this upright utensil drawer organizer, you’ll need a few common items, many of which you might already have or can easily acquire. Quality materials ensure durability and a professional finish, while the right tools simplify the process and enhance safety.
- (2) 2x 1/2″ strips of wood: These will serve as your ledger strips, providing the foundational support for the plywood insert. Ensure they are cut to the precise length of your drawer’s interior width.
- 1/2″ sanded plywood or MDF: This piece will form the top platform where your utensil holders rest. It needs to be cut to fit the inside length and width of your drawer, leaving approximately 1/8″ clearance on each side for easy installation and removal.
- Stainless steel utensil holders with lips: The star of the show! These are widely available and crucial for the vertical storage concept. Their integrated lips allow them to rest securely on the plywood platform. You can find a good selection at online retailers like Amazon or Ebay.
- 1″ wood screws: Essential for securely attaching the ledger strips to the drawer sides.
- Jigsaw: Your primary tool for cutting the circular openings in the plywood. A quality jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade will yield cleaner cuts.
- Drill: Necessary for pre-drilling pilot holes and driving screws, preventing wood splitting.
- Measuring tape and pencil: For accurate measurements and marking.
- Safety glasses: Always wear eye protection when using power tools.
Step 1 – Precise Measurement for Ledger Strips
Accurate measurement is the cornerstone of any successful DIY project, and this organizer is no exception. The goal here is to determine the perfect height for your ledger strips within the drawer, ensuring the utensil holders sit at just the right level. Begin by measuring the full depth of your chosen utensil holders, from the very bottom to the top edge of their lip. This lip is what will ultimately rest on your custom plywood insert. Next, subtract the thickness of your ledger strips and the thickness of your plywood from this utensil holder depth. For instance, if your holders are 5″ deep, your plywood is 1/2″ thick, and your ledger strips are 1 3/4″ wide (meaning their height), your calculation would be 5″ – (1/2″ + 1 3/4″) = 2 3/4″. This result, 2 3/4″, indicates the distance from the bottom of the drawer to the *bottom edge* of where your ledger strip should be placed. For practical purposes and ease of installation, you can round this slightly to an even 3 inches, providing a comfortable margin. Mark this height clearly on both inner sides of your drawer.
Step 2 – Attaching the Ledger Strips (Supports)
With your measurements marked, it’s time to install the ledger strips. These strips will act as the crucial support system for your entire organizer. To ensure they are perfectly level and positioned correctly, I highly recommend using a scrap piece of wood cut to the 3-inch measurement (or whatever your final calculated distance was from Step 1) as a spacer. This spacer should be placed on the bottom of the drawer, and the ledger strip will rest directly on top of it. This simple trick will keep your ledger strip steady and perfectly aligned while you secure it. Begin by placing one ledger strip against the marked line on the inside of the drawer.
Step 3 – Secure the Supports
Before driving any screws, it’s vital to pre-drill pilot holes at each end of the ledger strip. This preventative measure minimizes the risk of splitting the wood, ensuring a cleaner and more secure attachment. Using your drill, create a pilot hole that is slightly smaller in diameter than your 1-inch wood screws. Once the pilot holes are ready, insert a 1-inch wood screw into each hole, driving them firmly into the drawer side. Repeat this entire process for the ledger strip on the opposite side of the drawer. Double-check that both ledger strips are parallel and at the same height, as this will ensure your plywood insert sits level.
Step 4 – Determine Utensil Holder Placement and Layout
Now comes the creative part: deciding how your utensil holders will be arranged on the plywood. This step is crucial for both functionality and aesthetics. Lay your pre-cut plywood piece flat on a stable surface. Take your stainless steel utensil holders and experiment with different layouts until you find one that maximizes space, allows easy access to all utensils, and pleases your eye. On my organizer, I opted for an even distribution of all six holders, ensuring a balanced and symmetrical look. Once you’ve finalized your desired arrangement, carefully trace the outline of each utensil holder onto the plywood using a pencil. Make sure to clearly mark the exact circles you’ll be cutting.

Step 5 – Cutting the Openings for Utensil Holders
This step requires precision and careful handling of your jigsaw. First, for each traced circle, drill a pilot hole using your drill. This starting hole should be just large enough to insert your jigsaw blade. Once the pilot holes are drilled, use your jigsaw to carefully cut out the circular openings. A critical tip here is to make your cut approximately 1/4″ *inside* the traced line. This intentional margin creates a small ledge, which is essential for the lip of your stainless steel utensil holders to rest upon securely. After cutting each hole, test the fit of your utensil holders. They should sit snugly, with their lips resting on the plywood’s edge, but should also be easily removable. Adjust as necessary, carefully widening the hole if a fit is too tight.
Safety Tip: When operating a jigsaw, always place the visible, finished side of your wood face down. This way, any minor splintering that might occur on the exit side of the blade will be on the underside of your organizer and won’t be visible. Remember to wear appropriate safety glasses throughout this process.
Here you can see the back side of my plywood after all six holes have been carefully cut. As you might notice, these cuts don’t need to be absolutely perfect, and that’s perfectly fine! The slight imperfections will be hidden once the utensil holders are in place, so don’t fret over minor irregularities. The key is a functional ledge for the holders.
Step 6 – Applying a Protective Finish
Before assembling your organizer, it’s crucial to apply a protective finish to the plywood. This step is not merely for aesthetics; it plays a vital role in ensuring the longevity and hygiene of your organizer, especially in a kitchen environment where spills and splashes are common. Without a proper finish, the bare wood would be difficult to clean and susceptible to absorbing moisture, stains, and odors over time. I highly recommend painting the plywood or applying a clear protective coat. In my case, I was fortunate to use a leftover piece of wood from a previous vent hood installation, which already had a finish. However, for most projects like this, I frequently turn to Polycrylic. This water-based protective finish dries clear, is durable, and easy to apply, making it an excellent choice for surfaces that need to withstand regular cleaning and light wear. Apply several thin coats, allowing adequate drying time between each, to achieve optimal protection.
Step 7: Final Assembly and Enjoyment
With all the components prepared and the finish cured, it’s time for the gratifying final step: assembling your new utensil organizer. Carefully slide the finished plywood piece into the drawer, letting it rest securely on the ledger strips you installed earlier. It should fit snugly but still be easily removable. Once the platform is in place, insert your stainless steel utensil holders into their designated openings. The lips of the holders should rest perfectly on the plywood ledge, keeping them stable. Finally, arrange all your cooking utensils vertically within the holders. Step back and admire your beautifully organized, highly functional drawer!
This DIY project proved to be an incredible value. When I was designing my cabinets, a custom-built version of this organizer was quoted at around $200. By choosing the DIY route, my total expenditure was a mere $32, representing substantial savings. Beyond the cost benefits, this design offers superior flexibility: the entire organizer can be easily lifted out for thorough cleaning of both the drawer and the plywood insert. This level of convenience is often absent in fixed custom solutions. Truly, I believe this project delivered on both cost-effectiveness and practical design!
