Hello, fellow Remodelaholics! I’m Colleen from Lemon Thistle, where I share my passion for DIY projects, hand lettering, and home decor. I’m thrilled to be part of Remodelaholic’s #PlywoodPretty showcase with this easy-to-create graphic plywood sign. Plywood is one of my favorite materials to work with, and I often incorporate it into my home projects and signs. I particularly love the light birch plywood for its modern, Scandinavian aesthetic. And the best part? It requires minimal prep, making it a convenient choice for crafting.

This project is incredibly simple to execute, yet the result is a bold and eye-catching monogram sign. For this particular sign, I opted for an ebony stain from Minwax, which beautifully contrasts the light birch while allowing the natural wood grain to shine through. You can easily adapt this technique to create a fancy script monogram or any other design you desire. I chose a simple, rustic “S” for a young boy’s room, using the True North font – one of my go-to choices for an imperfect sans serif. The font’s wavy edges are perfectly suited to this staining technique, as they allow for some intentional bleed.
It’s important to note that craft plywood tends to bleed quite a bit with stain. If you prefer a cleaner, more defined edge, you can opt for a different type of plywood. I’ve had success with SPF plywood in similar projects, which resulted in minimal to no bleed. The choice is yours, depending on the aesthetic you’re aiming for!

How to Create Your Own Rustic Stained Plywood Monogram Sign
Ready to get started? Follow these simple DIY instructions to create your own personalized plywood monogram sign:
Step 1: Prepare Your Stencil
The first step is to create a stencil of your chosen letter or design. You have several options for this: you can draw it freehand, print out a letter and cut it out of vinyl or transfer paper, or use a cutting machine like a Cricut. I personally used my Cricut to cut out the “S” directly from their Design Space. Whichever method you choose, ensure your stencil is clean and well-defined.

Step 2: Apply the Stencil
Carefully position your stencil onto the plywood surface. Make sure it’s smoothed down thoroughly to prevent the stain from seeping underneath. This is a crucial step to ensure crisp and clean lines in your finished design. Pay close attention to the edges of the stencil, pressing firmly to create a good seal.
Step 3: Staining the Plywood
Now comes the fun part – applying the stain! Keep in mind that the dryer you apply the stain, the less bleed you’ll experience. If you desire a darker color, like the charcoal hue I used, you’ll need to apply the stain more generously. However, be aware that this will increase the likelihood of bleeding. I personally love the way the bleed complements the uneven edges of the font, adding to the sign’s rustic charm. I used a rag to apply the stain, as a brush tends to apply it even heavier. Start your strokes on the stencil and wipe away from the edge to avoid buildup and a dark line around the stencil’s perimeter.

Step 4: Let it Dry
Once you’re satisfied with the color and coverage, allow the stain to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. The drying time will vary depending on the type of stain you use and the humidity levels in your environment. Refer to the stain manufacturer’s instructions for specific drying times. Patience is key here – avoid the temptation to peel back the stencil prematurely, as this could result in smudging or uneven staining.
Step 5: Reveal Your Masterpiece!
With the stain fully dry, carefully peel back the stencil to reveal your stunning monogram design! This is always the most exciting part of the project, as you witness your vision come to life. Take your time as you remove the stencil, paying attention to any delicate areas to prevent tearing or damage to the stained design.
Step 6: Cut and Sand (Optional)
The craft birch plywood I used typically comes in two sizes: 12×12 inches or 12×24 inches. Since I wanted a larger sign, I opted for the 12×24 inch piece and cut it to size afterwards using a jigsaw with a fine blade. A fine blade is essential for preventing chipping on delicate plywoods like birch. Once cut, lightly sand the edges with 120 grit sandpaper to create a smooth, finished look. If you happen to get stain on any of the edges and prefer an unstained look, simply run your sandpaper over the stained edges to remove the excess stain.

And that’s it! Your rustic stained plywood monogram sign is complete. I absolutely love how this sign looks in a vignette setting. It would also be a fantastic addition to a modern kid’s bedroom, displayed on a picture ledge. Alternatively, you could incorporate it into a gallery wall. For lightweight pieces like this, I often use super glue to attach sawtooth hangers to the back – it works like a charm!
