It’s always a fun exercise to participate in creative challenges, and today I’m joining Layla’s word party. The challenge is to select a single word to define the upcoming year. However, I find myself staring at a blank canvas, unsure of which word best encapsulates my aspirations. Choosing a single favorite has never been my strong suit.
The word “Balance” immediately springs to mind. Striving for more balance in my life is a constant desire. Yet, with two young children at home, the concept of balance feels more like a whimsical illusion, dictated by the unpredictable rhythm of their nap schedules. Therefore, I’m consciously avoiding “Balance” as my word for the year. I don’t want to set myself up for inevitable disappointment.

Another contender is “Survive.” While some may possess an abundance of patience and navigate daily life with serene ease, I often find myself feeling overwhelmed and stressed. The word “Survive” seems to acknowledge the intensity of my current reality.

Perhaps I should embrace a more aspirational word, something like “Adventure.” While I find a certain thrill in home renovation projects, like knocking down a wall, I’m not generally one to seek out adrenaline-pumping experiences. Skydiving and bungee jumping aren’t exactly on my bucket list. So, “Adventure” feels a bit disingenuous.

So, let’s get real. Maybe by exploring different ideas, the perfect word will eventually emerge. What do I truly desire for the year ahead?
One of my primary goals is to become a better mother. I want to empower my children to make their own decisions, resisting the urge to let my impatience dictate their choices. Simple things like allowing them to choose their clothes, even if it means wearing pajamas a little longer, can foster confidence and independence. These seemingly insignificant decisions can contribute to their overall development.
The concept of “Order” also resonates deeply. I find myself yearning for order in my home, my life, and my daily routines. Right now, everything feels chaotic and overwhelming. Attempting large-scale organization projects while the children are awake is a recipe for disaster, typically resulting in multiple meltdowns and ultimate defeat. I need to release some of my perfectionist tendencies and accept that, as a mother of young children, I can realistically excel at only one or two things at a time. The rest will have to wait.
For instance, if nutrition is a passion, I can prioritize healthy meals. If cleanliness is a priority, I can dedicate time to maintaining a tidy home. If crafting is my thing, I can organize fun activities for my children. However, it’s impossible to excel at everything simultaneously. As I’ve reflected on my priorities before, this realization is becoming increasingly clear.
Perhaps “Order” deserves further consideration as a guiding principle for my days. While it might sound somewhat uninspired, the underlying sentiment is appealing.
Wait a minute… I think I’ve got it! How about “Simplify”? But is there a more captivating synonym that captures the essence of simplification?
Yes, “Simplify” it is! While it may be a common choice, its universality is undeniable. I long to eliminate the superfluous from my life, starting with decluttering my home, shedding those lingering baby pounds, and minimizing time-wasting activities that steal precious moments from my family.
According to the dictionary:
Simplify [sim-pluh-fahy]

Antonyms: Complicate, confuse, make difficult.
For my family, this is a particularly challenging period. My husband’s job security is uncertain, and there’s a strong possibility he’ll be unemployed soon. The lack of work has created months of anxiety and uncertainty. I’m eager to resolve the situation and understand the full impact, but the constant waiting is draining. Let’s move on.
Is there a more compelling word than “Simplify”? I believe “Focus” is a strong contender. I want to eliminate the vague and unnecessary, directing my energy toward what truly matters. Yes, “Focus” feels right. I even have a graphic in mind. I’m sticking with “Focus.”

How I want to be in focus.
I want to maintain a clear vision of my ultimate life goals, minimizing worry about daily minutiae. As long as my overarching goals, spiritual commitments, and core values remain in focus, I can live with purpose and intention.
My children’s happiness and well-rounded education should be my top priorities, not distractions that prevent me from giving them my undivided attention. I need to focus on quality time and meaningful experiences.
I want to focus on activities and relationships that bring me joy, eliminating those that drain my energy and diminish my well-being. This applies to both my time management and the physical space in my home. If something doesn’t spark joy, I’m letting it go. Decluttering my home will declutter my mind.
I want to focus on my husband’s needs and our shared goals for the future. Strengthening our bond and supporting each other’s aspirations is paramount.
I want to embrace my authentic self and pursue my passions without distractions. This means prioritizing self-care and carving out time for personal growth.
Therefore, my word for the year is “Focus.” It’s a call to action, a reminder to prioritize what truly matters, and a commitment to living a more intentional and fulfilling life.
What do you want to focus on this year?
Finding focus in a world full of distractions is no easy feat. It requires conscious effort, mindful decision-making, and a willingness to say “no” to opportunities that don’t align with our core values. But the rewards of living a focused life are immeasurable: greater clarity, increased productivity, deeper relationships, and a profound sense of purpose.
For me, “Focus” means simplifying my schedule, decluttering my physical space, and minimizing my exposure to social media. It means prioritizing quality time with my family, nurturing my relationships, and dedicating myself to projects that ignite my passion. It means saying “no” to commitments that drain my energy and prevent me from pursuing my goals.
It also means being present in the moment, savoring the small joys of everyday life, and appreciating the beauty that surrounds me. It means practicing gratitude, cultivating mindfulness, and nurturing my spiritual well-being.
Ultimately, “Focus” is a journey, not a destination. It’s a continuous process of refinement, adjustment, and self-discovery. It’s about learning to prioritize what truly matters and letting go of what no longer serves us. It’s about creating a life that is aligned with our values and reflects our authentic selves.
So, as I embark on this new year, I invite you to join me in embracing the power of “Focus.” Let’s commit to living more intentionally, prioritizing what truly matters, and creating lives that are filled with purpose, joy, and fulfillment.
What will you focus on?
