Meet Anna and Explore Take the Side Street

For those new to my corner of the internet, I’m Anna, and my blog, Take the Side Street, launched last fall from a blend of passion and necessity. First, I confess, I love to talk—and writing is essentially talking on paper. My family can attest to my love for words! Secondly, my husband and I recently moved into a charming 1960s-built home that was ripe for transformation. I wanted a platform to document all the “fun” things we embarked upon, like the satisfying (and sometimes surprising) process of ripping out wood paneling and old carpet, much to the initial *surprise* (and eventual approval) of my very good-natured husband.

My blog is a reflection of real-life homeownership and the beautiful chaos that comes with it. We cover what I believe are some of the most crucial, hard-hitting topics: decor, design, DIY projects, the occasional indulgence in doughnuts, and a healthy dose of lighthearted “dumb stuff” that makes life interesting. It’s about making your home a place you love, on a budget, and with a smile. If you enjoy practical tips, creative solutions, and a candid look at home improvement, you’ll feel right at home with us.

Unveiling the Stairwell’s Hidden Potential: Before the Makeover

Today’s featured project is our basement stairwell makeover. Unlike homes with grand foyers, our 1960s abode boasts a finished basement, meaning our stairwell to the lower level was a rather wonky, utilitarian space. It was the kind of area you’d rush through, barely noticing, primarily seen by family members and perhaps the occasional brave friend. However, I saw an opportunity. This overlooked passageway could be more than just a functional route; it could be a vibrant, welcoming transition, a precursor to the fabulous basement we envision (once we gut it and start charging admission for tours, of course!).

Earlier this year, I decided it was time to peel back the layers of neglect and datedness that obscured its potential. This stairwell was an amalgamation of “evil, funk, intrigue, and wallpaper,” each layer conspiring against any semblance of charm or modernity. It was a dark, uninspiring tunnel that truly deserved better. My mission was clear: transform this forgotten space into a bright and cheerful pathway that reflects the personality of our home.

The Journey Begins: Confronting the “Before”

The first step in this ambitious DIY stairwell transformation was confronting the existing condition. The walls were adorned with layers of old wallpaper, each pattern fighting for attention in the most unflattering way possible. This wasn’t just a simple peel-and-stick job; it was an archaeological excavation of home decor history.

I bravely faced my fear of heights and, more dauntingly, my aversion to bad patterns. Many evenings were spent perched on a ladder, diligently peeling, scraping, and sanding. My laptop, streaming episodes of old sitcoms, became my faithful companion as I worked through the physical and emotional toll of wallpaper removal. There were moments of frustration, moments of triumph, and yes, even moments of weeping. But each strip removed brought us closer to a clean slate.

Here’s a glimpse of the stairwell after I began the arduous task of stripping away those decades of wallpaper. You can start to see the bones of the space emerging from beneath the clutter of patterns.

From Grime to Shine: Carpet and Vinyl Demolition

With the wallpaper gone, the next challenge was the flooring. The stairs were covered in old carpet, which, once removed, revealed an even more “charming” surprise underneath: glittery faux-tile vinyl. This wasn’t a job for the faint of heart, and I’ll be honest, I definitely had some much-appreciated help with this phase. Scraping up old mastic is no joke, y’all! It’s a sticky, labor-intensive process that tests your patience and your muscles.

The removal of the carpet and vinyl was crucial for achieving a clean, modern aesthetic. It opened up the space, allowing the potential of the wooden stairs to truly shine through. This stage of the renovation was messy and demanding, but seeing those layers of outdated flooring disappear was incredibly motivating.

Prepping for Perfection: The Art of Sanding

After the demolition, the real prep work began. I sanded those stairs until my arms ached and I seriously considered abandoning the project for a fantasy elevator installation. Achieving a smooth, paintable surface required dedication and countless hours. Every imperfection had to be addressed to ensure the final painted finish would look professional and last for years to come. Sanding is often the least glamorous part of any DIY painting project, but it is undeniably one of the most important for a flawless result.

This painstaking preparation laid the groundwork for the creative elements to come. It was about creating a blank canvas, ready to be transformed into something truly special.

Adding Architectural Detail: The Faux Stair Skirt

One detail that significantly elevated the look of our stairwell was the addition of a faux stair skirt. Many older homes lack this architectural trim, which visually “finishes” the side of the staircase where it meets the wall. Installing a faux skirt created a polished, built-in look that made the entire stairwell feel more substantial and intentionally designed. It’s amazing how a simple piece of trim can make such a dramatic difference in adding character and definition to a space.

This step involved careful measurements, cutting, and meticulous caulking to ensure seamless lines. The faux stair skirt is one of those subtle enhancements that truly makes the final painted runner stand out, framing the design beautifully.

Brightening the Space: New Paint and a Budget-Friendly Lantern

With the structural elements addressed, it was time for paint! A fresh coat of paint dramatically brightened the formerly dark and dismal stairwell. Choosing the right shade for the walls instantly modernized the space and set the stage for the colorful runner. But the transformation wasn’t limited to the walls and stairs; even the lighting got an upgrade.

I scored a fantastic lantern for just $10 from my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. With a little imagination and some fresh paint, this budget-friendly find was completely made over, adding a touch of elegance and character without breaking the bank. It’s a testament to the power of upcycling and how a small detail can make a big impact.

The Grand Finale: Painting the Stair Runner

The pièce de résistance of this stairwell makeover was, of course, the painted stair runner. This is where the creativity really came to life! I painted the entire stair treads a crisp white as a base, providing a clean and bright foundation. Then, using painter’s tape, I meticulously marked out the design for my runner. I chose a cheerful yellow for the main runner, a color that instantly brings warmth and personality to the once-drab stairwell. The precision involved in taping ensures sharp, clean lines, which is crucial for a professional-looking painted runner.

To add a touch of sophistication and definition, I then carefully added a dark grey pinstripe along the edges of the yellow runner. This subtle detail helps ground the vibrant yellow and ties it into the overall color scheme. Once all the painting was complete and perfectly dry, the entire surface was sealed with a durable topcoat to protect it from wear and tear, ensuring that this beautiful design will last. And, naturally, upon completion, I threw a party! Because every major DIY achievement deserves a celebration!

The Transformed Space: Enjoying the Results of Hard Work

For real, this girl was absolutely overjoyed to be done! The effort, the patience, the occasional tears—it was all so incredibly worth it. I absolutely adore my new yellow stairs. Now, when I descend into what is still very much a “dungeon of a laundry room” (a future project in progress!), I can’t help but smile. The vibrant runner and the brightened stairwell have completely changed the feel of this once-neglected space, turning a mundane pathway into a delightful journey.

This project is a perfect example of how much impact a DIY home improvement project can have, even in the most unlikely places. It shows that with a vision, a little elbow grease, and perhaps some sitcom binge-watching, you can transform any part of your home into a place that brings you joy every day.
