Coffee Table Transformation: A Beadboard Makeover

Coffee Table Makeover: Adding Beadboard for a Fresh New Look

By AKA Design

If you’re a regular visitor here, you’ll know that we’ve been steadily renovating our charming war-era bungalow, tackling one DIY project at a time. I’ll admit, I often find myself jumping between projects, never quite finishing one room before diving into another. (My cleaning habits are similar – a little here, oh, something’s dirty there!). Consequently, tasks like installing the perfect light fixture in the kitchen and painting the hallway ceiling remain on my ever-growing to-do list.

The living room mini-makeover is no exception. It began with the intention of painting our pine TV armoire. (Apparently, a whopping 92% of our readers encouraged us to paint it!). However, as soon as the first coat of paint hit the armoire, it became clear that our old-fashioned country coffee table desperately needed some attention. (Yes, you might spot a heart cutout. Ah, the decorating sins of the past!).

Being the incredibly thrifty individual I am (especially these days!) and not wanting to invest in a new coffee table, yet equally unwilling to endure those hearts for another moment, I brainstormed ways to disguise this cutesy relic. Initially, I tried draping a long black runner across the table’s center. While it offered a temporary solution, the hearts were still visible from certain angles. Not ideal. The idea of covering the hearts with something, perhaps a square of wood, crossed my mind. But then, a lightbulb moment! I remembered the leftover beadboard/wainscotting we had stored in the shed from our kitchen ceiling project.

At this juncture, I feel compelled to acknowledge just how AMAZING my husband is. Not only does he tolerate my endless projects, but he also willingly retrieves materials from the shed, braves the November chill on the deck with a table saw, and tackles tasks that I’m simply too clumsy to handle. He even drove out of town to pick up a Kijiji find after a long day at work (stay tuned for that project later!). He’s truly a gem – we’re a match made in DIY heaven!

Ahem. Anyway, back to the coffee table…

After Dean (my amazing husband) so graciously retrieved, measured, cut, and attached the beadboard, I painted the entire table with some leftover Behr Swiss Coffee (the color of the trim in the main areas of our house). This created a cohesive and seamless look throughout the living space. Choosing a neutral color like Swiss Coffee also allowed the beadboard texture to stand out without being overwhelming.

And then came the glazing! Adding a glaze took the coffee table from ordinary to extraordinary. The glazing process highlights the details of the beadboard and adds a touch of antique charm, perfectly complementing the character of our bungalow. You can read all about the specific glazing technique I used here. Glazing is a simple way to add depth and dimension to painted furniture, giving it a sophisticated and timeless appeal. It’s especially effective on pieces with intricate details, like our beadboard coffee table.

TADA! Here’s the finished coffee table! The transformation is remarkable, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. It’s amazing what a little beadboard, paint, and glaze can do to completely revitalize an old piece of furniture. This project not only saved us money but also gave our living room a much-needed style boost.

Finished Coffee Table with Beadboard

So, what do you think – a definite improvement, right? Do you have any furniture pieces that could benefit from a glazing makeover? I highly recommend giving it a try! It’s a relatively easy and inexpensive way to breathe new life into your existing furniture and add a touch of personality to your home decor.

Transforming furniture with beadboard is an excellent way to add texture and visual interest to any space. It’s a versatile material that can be used on a variety of surfaces, from coffee tables and side tables to dressers and headboards. The key is to carefully measure and cut the beadboard to ensure a perfect fit.

If you’re considering a similar project, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Preparation is key: Thoroughly clean and sand the surface of your furniture before applying the beadboard. This will ensure proper adhesion and a smooth finish.
  • Choose the right adhesive: Use a high-quality construction adhesive that is specifically designed for bonding wood to other materials.
  • Take your time: Don’t rush the process. Allow the adhesive to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  • Paint or stain to match your decor: Once the beadboard is securely attached, paint or stain it to complement your existing furniture and decor.

I’m always looking for new and creative ways to repurpose and upcycle old furniture. It’s not only a budget-friendly way to decorate your home but also a great way to reduce waste and give forgotten pieces a new lease on life. Plus, it’s a fun and rewarding way to express your creativity and add a personal touch to your living space.

This coffee table makeover is just one example of the many DIY projects we’ve undertaken to transform our bungalow into a cozy and inviting home. We believe that with a little creativity and elbow grease, anyone can create a beautiful and functional space without breaking the bank.
