We’ve broken boho style down into 10 key design elements, with Handmade projects for each one. Now you can Handmade the boho bedroom of your dreams!
1. Texture… so much texture!
The most important element of boho design is layering texture upon texture. You want your room to look soft, welcoming and dreamy. You can incorporate this in many ways – but textiles are crucial. You’ll want blankets, throws, pillows (you can never have too many pillows), curtains, more curtains, and rugs. The more varied the fabrics and tactile experience the better.

2. Yarn, string and twine.
The boho look is full of pom poms, tassels, cozy wrapped decor items, and other yarn goodies. String art and yarn wall hangings are a great way to bring this option into your room, but you can also use jute or rope to hang shelves, wrap vases and more. Don’t underestimate the power of adding giant pom poms to your blankets, or tassels to your lamp shades. Yarn or rope are great textile mediums that will bring even more texture into your space.

3. A vivid, varied color palette.
One huge marker of bohemian style is the memorable color pallet usually associated with the look. Deep jewel tones in all different shades are common – and you don’t have to pick just one or two favorites. With boho, more color offers a rich, luxurious look. If you prefer a more subtle approach, opt for white in all your major players (walls, furniture, bedspread) and add pops of color through artwork and accents.

Rag Rug Pillows // The White Buffalo

Pom Pom Pillow // A Kailo Chic Life
4. Mixing up the colors and patterns.
Instead of finding one main focal piece in a bright color or pattern, mix your patterns and colors in an almost whimsical display. Opt for prints like shibori, ikat, damask, batik, or anything with a moroccan or tribal feel. Use different types of fabrics – from heavy-weight upholstery to silk to fur. Counter all the color and patterns with a low-key white bedspread.

5. Macrame all the things.
No, seriously. All the things. You can find tutorials out there for everything from macrame lampshades to macrame room dividers. Macrame has had a modern resurgence, and there are some truly striking ways to incorporate this feature into your room. It’s possible to overwhelm your space, though, so in order to avoid turning your oasis into a kitschy 70’s nightmare, stick to one medium or large macrame item, or several small ones. For instance, a macrame curtain in front of your closet is great, but probably don’t add a macrame hanging chair and a macrame headboard as well.

6. Flower power.
Incorporating florals and greenery into the space is key. There are a ton of ways to add florals – from monograms to chandeliers – but if you prefer staying low-key in this area, adding potted plants is all you really need. Even a few hanging glass succulents or air plants can go a long way.

7. Other natural elements.
Nature is a big deal in bohemian style. Add wooden texture wherever possible – from furniture to accents. Raw or cut wood is great, but rustic elements like driftwood, branches, antlers, fur, botanical prints, etc. will really seal the deal.

8. Wood tones mixed with color.
Think color-blocking, but in an straightforward, natural way. Perhaps paint the legs on your wooden dresser and leave the rest rustic. Or add a vibrant, furry cushion on top of a low, raw-edge table. Again, this combination of all different textures, finishes, and colors is what boho is all about.

9. Hand-lettered artwork.
Ok, sure, this is pretty much all the rage in nearly any design style right now, but a few great hand-lettered quotes can really make the whole room. Try out quotes that embody the spirit of boho living – wanderlust, adventuring, being a free spirit. Paint them on natural elements like a wood slice, or a piece of white cotton in a dowel hanger instead of on a canvas.

10. Twinkle, twinkle, little lights…
So you may worry that adding string lights to your room will make it feel like living in a dorm. Truth? There are so many ways to do this that are tasteful, classy and just plain pretty. Fortunately, twinkle lights aren’t just a one-size scenario anymore – you can get awesomely show-grabbing globe lights, or clearly subtle mini fairy lights, and anything in between. You can go big or small with your lights – adding them as accents or as the main feature, it’s totally up to you. Twinkle lights add whimsy, romance, and a taste of light-heartedness which is important to boho design.
