Several years ago, my husband and I embarked on a significant journey: purchasing a 1951 ranch in Texas that desperately needed a makeover. We understood the commitment required, but our shared passion for do-it-yourself projects gave us the confidence to tackle the challenge ourselves. The living room, unfortunately, resembled more of an Italian restaurant than the cozy country cottage we envisioned. Our primary goal was to create a space that felt organic, as if it had been carefully curated over time. We discovered that by investing only in items we genuinely loved, the space naturally felt more inviting than if we had simply purchased a coordinated set from a single store. - Paint Colors: We chose Olympic “Toasted Almond” in a flat finish for the walls, providing a warm and neutral backdrop. For the trim, built-ins, and fireplace, we opted for Olympic “Ultra White” in a semi-gloss finish, creating a crisp and clean contrast.
- Decor Sourcing: Our decorations came from a variety of discounted home stores, including TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Tuesday Morning, Target, and even Walmart. These stores allowed us to find unique and affordable pieces to add character to the room. We also had great success at resale and antique shops, uncovering hidden gems that added a vintage touch.
- Curtain Solution: The curtains are actually painter’s drop cloths from Lowe’s! We desired something light and airy but were hesitant to spend a fortune, especially since we needed eight curtain panels. These drop cloths proved to be the perfect solution, fitting the room beautifully and costing only $9.99 each.
The transformation was all about finding the right balance between affordability and style, proving that you don’t need a huge budget to create a beautiful and inviting living space.
