Essential Materials for Your DIY Wall Sconce
Gathering the right materials is the first step to a successful DIY project. For this industrial modern wall sconce, we’ve carefully selected components that are both affordable and accessible, ensuring a smooth building process from start to finish. Most items can be found at your local craft store or hardware shop.
- 1 – Plywood Sheet 12″ x .25″ x 24″: This serves as the primary backing for your sconce, providing a sturdy and customizable base. The specified dimensions are ideal for creating a compact yet noticeable fixture. You can find high-quality plywood sheets at craft stores like Joann Fabrics. For a different aesthetic, consider using reclaimed wood or a different wood species.
- 1 – Craft Wood Tissue Box: This ingenious component forms the housing for your light fixture, offering a neat and contained look. Its pre-fab structure simplifies the project significantly. A basswood tissue box from Joann Fabrics works perfectly.
- 1 – Corded Light: The heart of your sconce! A simple corded light, such as the Ikea SEKUND corded light, is recommended for its straightforward design and ease of modification. Ensure it’s a plug-in type for that renter-friendly appeal.
- 1 – 3/4″ x 24″ Copper Pipe: This element lends the distinctive industrial modern touch. Copper is chosen for its beautiful finish and malleability. The 24-inch length provides ample material for customization.
- 2 – 3/4″ 90 Degree Copper Elbows: These elbows are crucial for creating the elegant curve of the light arm, guiding the cord with precision and style.
- 2 – 3/4″ Copper Fasteners: Used to secure the copper pipe firmly to the plywood backing, maintaining the industrial aesthetic.
- 8 – 1″ Screws: Essential for assembling the wooden components. Feel free to use screws you have on hand, but ensure they are suitable for wood.
- 2 – 2.5″ Nails: For securely mounting your finished sconce to the wall. These long nails provide sufficient grip.
- Wood Glue: A strong adhesive is vital for creating a robust and long-lasting plywood backing. Don’t skimp on quality here.
Tools Required for Your Sconce Project
Having the right tools makes all the difference in a DIY endeavor. These common household and workshop tools will ensure your project is completed with ease and precision.
- Hack Saw or Pipe Cutter: Necessary for cleanly cutting your copper pipe to the desired length. A pipe cutter offers a cleaner, quicker cut, but a hacksaw works just as well with a steady hand.
- Miter Saw: Ideal for making precise, straight cuts on your plywood. If a miter saw isn’t available, a circular saw or even a hand saw with a miter box can be used, though extra care will be needed for accuracy.
- Drill: Indispensable for pre-drilling holes and driving screws, ensuring a secure and damage-free assembly.
- Ruler: For accurate measurements, critical for ensuring all components fit together perfectly.
- Pen or Pencil: For marking cutting lines and screw points.
Step-by-Step Guide: Building Your Industrial Modern Wall Sconce
Follow these detailed instructions to construct your stunning DIY wall sconce. Remember to prioritize safety throughout the process by wearing appropriate protective gear and exercising caution when using power tools.

Step 1: Prepare Your Plywood Base.
Begin by taking your 12″ x .25″ x 24″ plywood sheet. Using your miter saw (or chosen cutting tool), carefully cut this sheet exactly in half lengthwise. This will give you two identical pieces, each measuring approximately 12″ x .25″ x 12″. Precision here ensures a symmetrical and balanced sconce. These two pieces will be glued together to create a thicker, more substantial backing for your fixture, enhancing both its durability and aesthetic appeal.

Step 2: Modify the Craft Wood Tissue Box.
Select one side of your craft wood tissue box – this will be the front-facing panel where your light will emerge. Carefully measure and mark a central opening on this side, leaving approximately 1.5 inches of wood intact on either vertical edge. Using a utility knife or a small saw, meticulously cut out the marked middle section. This opening will allow the light fixture to be neatly housed within the box, giving it a clean, integrated look. Take your time to ensure a clean cut, as this will be visible on your finished sconce.

Step 3: Laminate the Plywood for Added Thickness.
Apply a generous, even layer of wood glue to one side of one of your cut plywood pieces. Carefully align the second plywood piece on top, ensuring all edges match perfectly. Press them together firmly. To create a strong, lasting bond, place a heavy object on top of the glued plywood (as shown in the image) or use clamps. Allow the glue to dry completely overnight. This crucial step creates a thick, robust backing that provides structural integrity and a more substantial aesthetic for your sconce, giving it a high-quality, custom-made feel.
Step 4: Cut and Assemble the Copper Pipe Arm.
Now it’s time to fashion the distinctive copper arm for your sconce. Take your 3/4″ x 24″ copper pipe. Using either a hacksaw or a pipe cutter, carefully cut the pipe to your desired length. I found that approximately 14 inches works beautifully for a balanced look, but you can adjust this based on your personal preference. Once cut, simply fit the two 90-degree copper elbows onto either end of the pipe. These pieces will form the elegant curve of your light arm, directing the light outward and adding to the industrial charm.

Step 5: Position and Mark the Tissue Box.
Take your now-thickened plywood backing. Carefully position the modified craft wood tissue box in the center of the plywood. Once you are satisfied with its placement, use a pen or pencil to mark the exact location on both sides of the tissue box where it will attach to the plywood. These marks will serve as guides for the next step, ensuring your tissue box is perfectly centered and aligned.

Step 6: Secure the Tissue Box to the Plywood.
With your marks in place, it’s time to attach the tissue box. From the back of the plywood sheet, use your drill to drive screws through the plywood and into the marked spots on the tissue box. Ensure the screws are long enough to securely fasten the tissue box without protruding through the front. Pre-drilling pilot holes can prevent the wood from splitting and make driving the screws easier. This creates the main housing for your electrical components.
Step 7: Prepare the Corded Light for Installation.
This step involves a bit of electrical work, so proceed with caution. The goal is to route the corded light through your copper pipe. For specific instructions on how to safely disassemble and reassemble an Ikea Hemma Cord Set (or a similar corded light), please refer to THIS detailed tutorial. It’s crucial to understand how to correctly feed the cord through the pipe and then reattach the socket securely. Always ensure the light is unplugged before beginning any work on the wiring. Once reassembled, the cord should emerge from one end of your copper pipe, ready for the bulb.

Step 8: Attach the Copper Fasteners.
With the tissue box securely attached and the corded light prepared, it’s time to integrate the copper pipe. Position your two 3/4″ copper fasteners onto the plywood backing: one just above the tissue box and one just below it. These fasteners should be aligned to cradle the copper pipe firmly. Use screws to drill these fasteners into the plywood, ensuring they are tight enough to hold the copper pipe in place without slipping. This step completes the structural integrity and aesthetic of the industrial-style arm.

Step 9: Prepare for Wall Mounting.
Finally, prepare your sconce for easy installation. Using your drill, create two small pilot holes in the top two corners of the plywood backing. These holes should be just large enough for your 2.5″ nails to fit through comfortably. When you’re ready to hang your sconce, simply position it on the wall in your desired location and use these pre-drilled holes to guide the nails directly into the wall. This method allows for straightforward mounting and equally simple removal, making it perfectly suited for rental properties.
