As dedicated DIY home bloggers, Cassity and I are continually immersed in the exciting world of home improvement, constantly discovering and evaluating innovative products designed to enhance living spaces. While our blog often showcases the beautiful final touches of a renovated room, we recently embarked on a journey that took us behind the scenes, delving deep into the foundational elements that truly define a quality build: drywall and cement board. We discovered the immense importance of making informed decisions about these underlying materials – the unsung heroes hidden beneath paint and tile – as they form the crucial bedrock for everything else in a room, significantly contributing to its durability, comfort, and aesthetic appeal. Our sincere thanks go to National Gypsum for their invaluable partnership and for enlightening us about their exceptional line of products, especially the revolutionary PURPLE XP®.
Transform Your Home with National Gypsum’s PURPLE XP® Drywall: A DIY Blogger’s Deep Dive
The most exhilarating aspect of learning about PURPLE XP® drywall was the unparalleled opportunity to connect directly with the minds behind the innovation – National Gypsum. I had the privilege of being flown to their Charlotte, NC headquarters for an intensive two-day immersion into their comprehensive drywall product lines. Alongside four other passionate bloggers, I gained an education that redefined my understanding of what drywall can and should be.

The experience was enriched by the chance to meet fellow bloggers, sharing insights and discussing ongoing projects. A highlight was undoubtedly meeting Anitra Mecadon, the vibrant TV host of DIY Network’s Mega Dens. Her passion for promoting this advanced drywall product was infectious, and her firsthand expertise offered invaluable perspectives.
Beyond the Ordinary: Unveiling the Power of PURPLE XP® Drywall
Before this deep dive, a common question lingered in my mind, much like it might for many homeowners: “What exactly is PURPLE drywall? Isn’t all drywall essentially the same?” I quickly learned that this perception couldn’t be further from the truth. The world of drywall is far more sophisticated than I had imagined, with specialized solutions designed to address specific challenges in every corner of the home.

National Gypsum’s PURPLE XP® drywall range offers solutions for every room, not just traditionally wet areas like bathrooms. With a variety of specialized versions, this product line redefines expectations for home construction and renovation. The “XP” in PURPLE XP® stands for “Extra Protection,” a promise delivered through superior engineering and innovative materials that surpass the performance of conventional drywall.

A Detailed Look at PURPLE XP Residential Products and Their Unique Features
After an extensive learning session at National Gypsum, I compiled a summary of the standout features and benefits of their PURPLE XP Residential Products. These innovations offer unprecedented levels of protection and performance for homeowners and contractors alike:
- Comprehensive Protection: All PURPLE XP® products are engineered to be inherently resistant to mildew, moisture, and mold, making them ideal for any area prone to humidity or water exposure, and critical for maintaining a healthy indoor environment.
- Extra Protection (XP): The “XP” designation signifies an enhanced level of performance, going beyond standard industry requirements to provide superior durability and longevity.
- Quality Manufacturing: Proudly made in the USA, all PURPLE XP® drywall is crafted from a blend of natural and synthetic gypsum, ensuring consistent quality and structural integrity.
- Versatile Sizing: Available in standard 4×8 sheets, these products can also be custom-ordered in lengths exceeding 8 feet to accommodate diverse architectural designs and reduce seams.
- Standard Thicknesses: Offered in both 1/2″ and 5/8″ thicknesses, providing options for various structural and fire-rating requirements while maintaining ease of installation.
- Ease of Use: Despite their advanced properties, all PURPLE XP® drywall products cut and install just like traditional drywall, simplifying the renovation process for DIYers and professionals.
- Enhanced Fire Resistance: A critical safety feature, every product in the PURPLE XP® drywall line offers superior fire resistance, providing an added layer of protection for your home and family.
Specialized PURPLE XP® Drywall Solutions:
- PURPLE XP® Drywall: This versatile product is excellent for general use throughout the entire house. It’s particularly beneficial in moisture-prone areas like bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens, offering robust protection against humidity and potential mold growth.
- Hi-Abuse® XP® Drywall: Designed for high-traffic zones, this drywall provides superior resistance against abrasions, scuffs, and surface damage. It’s an ideal choice for hallways, stairwells, and busy family rooms – or any space shared with energetic teenagers!
- Hi-Impact® XP® Drywall: For areas subject to frequent impacts and potential damage, such as garages, playrooms, or home gyms, Hi-Impact® XP® is the ultimate solution. Its unique construction withstands significant force without creating large, unsightly holes, drastically simplifying repairs. This enhanced strength is attributed to a fiberglass mesh embedded on the backside, which acts as a robust reinforcement.
- SoundBreak® XP® Drywall: Experience tranquility with SoundBreak® XP®, specially formulated to significantly reduce sound transmission between rooms. Perfect for living rooms, media centers, bedrooms, or home offices, it can cut noise levels from adjacent spaces by half or more, creating a quieter and more private environment.
- ProForm® XP® Ready Mix with Dust-Tech® Joint Compound: Even the joint compound in the PURPLE XP® system is advanced. This innovative ready-mix compound shares the same mildew, moisture, and mold-resistant properties as the drywall. Furthermore, its revolutionary Dust-Tech® feature reduces airborne dust by approximately 60% during sanding, ensuring a cleaner job site and healthier air quality by causing dust particles to fall to the floor.
- PermaBase PLUS® Cement Board: The perfect companion for wet areas, PermaBase PLUS® Cement Board is naturally mildew, moisture, and mold resistant. It is the ideal substrate for tiling in showers, tubs, and other high-moisture environments. Its lightweight composition and flexibility allow it to conform to curved designs, while its ease of cutting and snapping with a utility knife makes installation remarkably straightforward. At 7/16″ thick, it provides a solid, durable base for tile applications.
National Gypsum’s innovative approach extends even to exterior applications. During our drives around Charlotte, we frequently observed new construction featuring their distinctive purple sheathing, a clear indicator of builders prioritizing superior external protection. It became an enjoyable game to spot new buildings adopting this advanced product.
Experiencing Innovation Firsthand: The National Gypsum Testing Center
A highlight of my visit to National Gypsum’s headquarters was the opportunity to tour their state-of-the-art testing center. Here, we weren’t just observers; we actively participated in demonstrating the exceptional resilience of their products. The most memorable test involved wielding a baseball bat against the PURPLE Hi-Impact® XP® drywall.
The Durability Challenge: Hi-Impact XP Drywall Bat Test
Approaching the wall with a confident swing, my initial hit against the Hi-Impact® XP® drywall resulted in nothing more than a small dent, roughly the size of a silver dollar. I had anticipated a much more dramatic outcome, expecting to smash a significant hole. However, it took five more incredibly forceful blows, concentrated in the exact same spot, to even partially break through the drywall. Crucially, even after these repeated impacts, the integrity of the board remained largely intact; it never created a fully blown-out hole.

The secret lies in the integrated fiberglass mesh within the PURPLE Hi-Impact® XP® drywall. This innovative reinforcement prevents complete penetration and catastrophic damage, meaning that any dents or superficial breaks are significantly easier to patch and repair compared to the gaping holes typically left in standard drywall. This feature alone is a game-changer for homes with active families or in areas prone to accidental impacts.
The Abrasion Resistance of Hi-Abuse XP
We also witnessed an impressive abrasion test performed on the PURPLE Hi-Abuse® XP® drywall. A 150-pound weight, fitted with a metal brush, was continuously dragged across the surface for a full minute. Astonishingly, after this rigorous assault, the metal brush failed to penetrate even the paper face of the drywall. In stark contrast, when standard drywall underwent the same test, it was scratched halfway through its board within the same minute, highlighting the superior durability of Hi-Abuse® XP®.

The Versatility of PermaBase PLUS® Cement Board
Our tour also featured a demonstration of the PURPLE PermaBase PLUS® Cement Board, showcasing its remarkable ease of cutting and installation. Historically, working with cement board involved messy and time-consuming cuts with a reciprocating saw. However, PermaBase PLUS® revolutionizes this process. Its significantly lighter weight and innovative composition allow it to be cut effortlessly with just a utility knife, much like traditional drywall. This ease of handling drastically reduces installation time and effort, making it a favorite for DIY enthusiasts and professionals alike.
Beyond its cutting ease, PermaBase PLUS® Cement Board exhibits impressive flexibility, capable of being shaped to fit curved walls, offering design possibilities that were once challenging or costly to achieve. This adaptability opens up new avenues for creative architectural features in bathrooms and other tiled spaces.

Another ingenious feature is its PURPLE edge coating, which reinforces the board’s perimeter, significantly reducing the risk of cracking when nails or screws are driven close to the edge. This thoughtful detail prevents frustrating mishaps during installation and contributes to a more secure and durable finish.
Behind the Scenes: A Tour of the Manufacturing Plant
Following a productive morning at headquarters, we embarked on a fascinating field trip to one of National Gypsum’s state-of-the-art manufacturing plants.

The Modern Marvel of Drywall Production
This particular facility was one of their newest and most advanced drywall manufacturing plants. Its sheer scale was breathtaking – stretching an incredible half-mile in length! The immense size is a testament to the high-speed production process and the critical curing time required before the drywall can be precisely cut into sheets. While photography was not permitted inside the plant, the experience was profoundly impressive.
We witnessed the entire intricate process firsthand, walking alongside the massive half-mile track as two layers of paper converged, sandwiching the gypsum mud to form continuous sheets. As it glided along the track, the drywall gradually hardened, preparing for its next stage. Once sufficiently cured, it was cut and then transported in the opposite direction into colossal ovens, stacked 14 layers high for final drying and baking. The efficiency was staggering: the entire, sprawling operation was managed by a surprisingly small team of approximately 15 workers, highlighting the advanced automation and streamlined processes in place.
Putting Skills to the Test: The Drywall Competition
On our final day in Charlotte, National Gypsum organized an exciting drywall competition among the five attending bloggers. The challenge encompassed several key drywalling tasks: precisely screwing in a specified number of drywall screws, expertly mixing joint compound, accurately taping a seam, and efficiently hanging cement board – all against the clock. To add a playful competitive edge, we even got to inflict a dent on an opponent’s drywall, which they then had to patch, kicking off the race.
After a fast-paced 30-minute race, the competition concluded. Our work was judged on both the quality of the craftsmanship and the cleanliness of our individual workstations. While I felt confident in my efforts, I was uncertain of the outcome, knowing I was up against some genuinely skilled drywallers. After a period of careful deliberation by the judges, the moment of truth arrived.

And the winner was… ME! What an incredible surprise! I couldn’t believe it. I proudly received a fantastic medal, a testament to a truly fun and educational experience.

My Next Home Project: A Basement Bathroom Transformation with PURPLE XP®
My personal home improvement journey currently involves an ambitious basement bathroom project. This space has literally sat unfinished for five decades, having only been plumbed. Our goal is to transform a simple powder room into a complete, fully functional bathroom. While Cassity and I have extensive experience remodeling existing bathrooms and even adding a new powder room, building one from the ground up, especially a full bathroom, presents a fresh set of challenges.
Addressing Common Challenges with Superior Products
A significant concern has been creating a truly watertight shower space. We’ve been deliberating over the best approach to ensure a durable, moisture-free environment. The timing of this immersive learning experience with National Gypsum couldn’t have been more perfect. I returned home armed with invaluable knowledge, ready to confidently tackle this complex project and prevent future mildew, moisture, and mold issues.
Why PURPLE XP® and PermaBase PLUS® Are Essential
My question about the ideal materials for the tub surround has been definitively answered. I will be utilizing National Gypsum’s PURPLE PermaBase PLUS® Cement Board for the entire tub enclosure and along all bathroom walls that will be tiled. This choice is crucial as it will establish the superior moisture barrier needed between the shower, walls, and the extensive tiling we plan to install. Furthermore, PermaBase PLUS® offers the best possible bond for tile adhesion, ensuring a lasting and beautiful finish. For the ceiling, I will be installing PURPLE XP® drywall. While the ceiling won’t be tiled, it still requires robust protection against moisture and humidity from the shower below.
I cannot wait to put this newfound knowledge into practice and begin the transformation.
A huge thank you to National Gypsum for the incredible insights and for showcasing your outstanding products during my visit to Charlotte, NC. I now have a clear roadmap and the perfect products to confidently embark on my next big home renovation. The anticipation of hanging PURPLE XP® drywall in our new basement bathroom is truly exciting!
