Refined Bungalow Kitchen: Reclaimed Wood Charm

Transforming an older home through renovation is a unique journey, distinct from updating a newer, builder-grade house. Both endeavors demand meticulous planning, significant effort, and unwavering dedication. However, there’s a special satisfaction in breathing new life into a charming older home, preserving its classic appeal while incorporating modern conveniences. Today, we’re delighted to showcase a project that perfectly embodies this philosophy. Laurel from SoPo Cottage has masterfully renovated a bungalow kitchen, creating a stunning space that seamlessly blends old-world charm with contemporary functionality. Prepare to be inspired by this incredible transformation!

The transformation began from this:

Adding to the brilliance of this project, the team cleverly repurposed original lumber to craft exquisite rustic features within the new kitchen. Now, let’s hear from Laurel herself as she guides us through the details of this remarkable bungalow kitchen renovation.

A Modern Take on Bungalow Kitchen Renovation

by Laurel from SoPo Cottage

Hello everyone! I’m Laurel from SoPo Cottage. We specialize in renovating older homes, infusing them with contemporary amenities while meticulously preserving their timeless charm and antique character. Our projects typically involve homes aged between 50 and 100 years, so we’ve encountered a wealth of architectural treasures! To explore our diverse range of projects, I invite you to visit my blog here. We’re constantly immersed in exciting and engaging projects.

Recently, we embarked on a comprehensive renovation of a 1927 bungalow. While the house had been well-maintained over the years, it was undeniably ready for a series of modern updates. One of the key assets of the bungalow was its generously sized kitchen. However, it was tucked away at the back of the house and suffered from inefficient space utilization. We addressed these issues by opening up the wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room and closing off a wall leading to a rear hallway. This strategic reconfiguration created the perfect space for a brand-new pantry.

Our primary objective throughout the renovation was to preserve the original antique sink. We had it professionally refinished, and it now serves as the captivating focal point of the room. I’m sure you’ll agree that the deep sink and integrated drain boards are simply stunning!

Open Shelves Made From Repurposed Wood

We meticulously saved all the wood salvaged from the demolition process, with the intention of incorporating it into the kitchen’s design. The first reclaimed wood project was these eye-catching open shelves positioned adjacent to the sink.

Furthermore, we repurposed old wall studs to create a unique countertop for the kitchen island. The reclaimed wood adds a wealth of character to the space, featuring deep, rich colors and an intriguing texture that is truly captivating.

The rear wall of the kitchen has been transformed from a blank canvas into a central cooking hub. To accentuate this area, we installed a custom-designed hood above the stove. If you’re curious about our DIY approach to crafting the wooden hood, be sure to check out the details here.

Glass Pantry Door

I discovered this antique door at a local salvage yard and meticulously refinished it, incorporating original antique glass salvaged from a window we had removed. To enhance the natural beauty of the wood, I simply applied an oil finish, which warmed up the lustre of the antique wood. Finally, I added an antique glass doorknob to complete the look.

Removing the wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room made a tremendous impact on the overall flow of the entire first floor!
